stint at Harlem\u2019s historic Apollo Theater for SiriusXM, he sits on a bed in what\u2019s supposed to be a replica of his mom\u2019s basement, surrounded by a single nightstand, a boombox, and a space heater. Sporting a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2011\/04\/drakes_sweaters.html\">cozy cardigan<\/a> reminiscent of something he\u2019d worn a decade ago, he starts his set with \u201cOver My Dead Body\u201d from <i>Take Care<\/i>, still his most cherished album. The first couple of chords set off a chain of screams before Chantal Kreviazuk\u2019s vocals are piped in: \u201cHow I\u2019m feeling, it doesn\u2019t matter. \u2018Cause you know I\u2019m okay. Instead, I ask myself, \u2018Why do you worry?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Drake has reopened a time capsule. Everyone here is their old self again, listening to Drake talk them through a very important heartbreak; and their present self, likely in a better place, a little more grown-up, probably less obsessed with that lover. I post a clip of it to my Instagram Story, and an influential DJ who produced a track for Drake on <i>Nothing Was The Same<\/i>, replies: \u201cSoundtrack to soooo many amazing after parties\u201d followed by five single-tear crying emojis. <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-241936\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left embed\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Over My Dead Body\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PMk8L9FNqnY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-241935\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            I may as well admit here that I was once the ultimate Drake stan. I had every song memorized. I had a photo of him on the background of my phone case. I had been granted \u201cThe Drake Award\u201d at my sorority formals for being \u201cthe most likely to Drake and drive to my ex\u2019s house.\u201d (I don\u2019t drive.) And, while there was one part of me that wanted to stay home tonight, the little Drake stan inside me wanted to say yes instantly when The FADER tried to send me here tonight.<\/p>\n<p>            That part of me had a good time at the Apollo. I\u2019d seen Drake twice before \u2014 both at Madison Square Garden on his <i>Views<\/i> tour in summer 2016 \u2014 but hearing him perform \u201cMarvins Room\u201d in 2023 was an entirely different experience. That voicemail recording is spine-chilling and the percussion pulses heavily. Every voice in the venue is reciting the lyrics, every hand up in the air with a phone in hand, re-recording Drake\u2019s peak.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            He ricochets through his discography, spending a little extra time on his earlier works, continuing to sit on his bed to play songs like \u201cBest I Ever Had\u201d and \u201cKaraoke\u201d from <i>So Far Gone<\/i> and \u201cJungle\u201d from <i>If You\u2019re Reading This It\u2019s Too Late<\/i> (still my favorite project of his). The lights go out for a few minutes and Drake returns in a new fit. I move to the back of the venue and grab another drink. <\/p>\n<p>            It triggers the part of me that wanted to stay home tonight. On the surface, maybe it\u2019s just how weird Drake seems today. He&#8217;s on the front page of every hip-hop blog because he just dissed the newest and hottest r<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>er in one of his endless cascade of new projects. His texting habits are questionable, as is his obsession with talking about every woman he\u2019s ever been associated with. <\/p>\n<p>            But the euphoric nostalgia at the Apollo tonight makes me realize that it\u2019s something more nebulous, something that maybe isn\u2019t all Drake\u2019s fault. The Drake whose face covered my phone case, the Drake who made music for momentous life events instead of Spotify playlists, disappeared a while ago. Today\u2019s Drake is more convoluted. He\u2019s now just become an avatar \u2014 a discourse magnet, whether you\u2019re talking about his newest album, his newest relationship, or his newest cultural costume. Whenever Rihanna breathes in a different direction, Drake is brought up. He\u2019s trending on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> for posting something strange on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hitc.com\/en-gb\/2022\/11\/04\/drake-posted-raunchy-anime-on-his-instagram-story-and-fans-are-going-wild\/\">his Instagram story<\/a>. The Canadian child star-turned-rapper was somehow the go-to artist when we were going through it, because, as the pilot episode of <i>Insecure<\/i> puts it: \u201cHe really gets us.\u201d Drake\u2019s nuance while navigating his relationships seemed to mimic our own coming-of-age conflicts. We had a role model who understood our struggles and made it feel okay to be the \u201cfurthest thing from perfect like everyone I know.\u201d So even if he was one of the biggest pop stars in the world, there was comfort in acknowledging your toxic tendencies \u2014 as long as you learned from them. Drake still seems to be coming to terms with that. <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            In the moment, though, it\u2019s easy to give in to the nostalgia. I did <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ariellenyc\/status\/1617350082411614209?s=20&amp;t=Jv0awAjLnA23ZgWnqumwfQ\">text my ex<\/a> tonight. At the Apollo, it felt good to go back to a less complicated time.
