He heads into the lounge instead and opens his phone, pulling up BandLab, the GarageBand-like <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a> on which he has recorded, engineered, and mastered everything he\u2019s ever released. His bubbled leather bomber and chunky black platforms squeak against the sticky couch. \u201cI\u2019m at a studio, it\u2019s crazy,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd I\u2019m still doing my shit on BandLab.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            Here is a very contemporary kind of budding star. Still just 17, d4vd has already cracked the Billboard Hot 100 and the Hot Alternative\/Rock charts \u2014 though that probably undersells how famous he is. He is ubiquitous on TikTok; his two biggest singles, \u201cRomantic Homicide\u201d and \u201cHere With Me,\u201d have basically been permanently viral since last summer. Though he\u2019d only been making music for a few weeks before blowing up on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> \u2014 and had only really been making music at all to avoid takedown notices on his gaming montages \u2014 major labels took an immediate interest in him. I ask what his friends think of his new fame. \u201cI don\u2019t have friends\u2026\u201d he says. \u201cWell, two that moved away. Now we just play video games.\u201d He insists that he\u2019s not famous. No one would recognize him in the supermarket. Within hours he was \u201cmessing around with the presets,\u201d creating his own instrumentals, and modulating his vocals.<\/p>\n<p>            Brought up in a devoutly Christian household in the Houston suburbs, without the social scene of a high school, d4vd hadn\u2019t really been immersed in music before he started making his own. Other gamers\u2019 Fortnite montages were his portal into that universe; he hurriedly devoured new genres and sounds, finding himself drawn to indie artists like The Neighborhood and Wallows. Soon, other gameplay accounts were using \u201cYou &amp; I\u201d in their montages, surprising his followers who knew @limit_ant as a gamer, not as a musician. \u201cThe Twitter community went crazy, calling me the first Fortnite artist. A hashtag \u2018the first fortnite artist\u2019 was even trending,\u201d he says proudly.<\/p>\n<p>            He began experimenting with different creator platforms, uploading \u201cYou &amp; I\u201d to SoundCloud before switching to TikTok to publicize his newest track, a lovesick 90-second slow-jam called \u201cNever Again.\u201d He tried jumping on video trends, including using a high-pitched Alvin and The Chipmunks sound to cover popular songs. They were not well received. \u201cA normal person would have been like, Okay, I&#8217;m getting hated on, maybe I should not do this,\u201d d4vd says, laughing. After signing with Darkroom\/Interscope Records, all his music was re-released officially on streaming platforms and, in September, bolstered by the mega-company\u2019s support, he released the Tokyo Ghoul-inspired \u201cRomantic Homicide\u201d music video, which catapulted him into the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 77.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cThis song feels like being stabbed,\u201d said one user on TikTok, where the song has gone viral with nearly 400,000 videos recording over it. And there is an intensity to d4vd\u2019s darkest thoughts here \u2014 \u201cIn the back of my mind \/ You died \/ And I didn&#8217;t even cry\u201d \u2014 even if the song itself sounds comparatively dreamy.
