Based on the original film screenplay and book from Emmy award winner Tina Fey, <em>Mean Girls <\/em>follows the same story of new kid in town Cady Heron, as she navigates the vicious world of high school suburbia \u2014 a place led by the ruthless plastics and their queen bee Regina George.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Ahead of the show\u2019s final weekend at the Pantages, <em>The Hollywood Reporter <\/em>caught up with the musical\u2019s composer Jeff Richmond, along with current cast members, to discuss the upcoming movie musical adaptation, Richmond\u2019s working relationship with his wife Fey and how the show is breaking barriers in Broadway diversity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    For Richmond, the journey to getting <em>Mean Girls <\/em>on a Broadway stage began with acquiring the rights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cTina and I had always talked about trying to do a musical for years,\u201d Richmond says about his wife and creative collaborator Fey. \u201c[<em>Mean Girls<\/em>] seemed like people had interest and were asking about it, asking us if we were ever interested in doing a musical. Because we\u2019re so close to Lorne and he\u2019s the one who would have to give us the rights to it, we just said, \u2018Let\u2019s just shoot for this.\u2019 And by gosh, we are able to get the rights to the movie that Tina wrote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    And so with the stage adaptation of <em>Mean Girls<\/em>, the Emmy-winning TV composer found his way back to his musical theater roots. Throughout his career, Richmond composed for shows like <em>30 Rock<\/em>, <em>Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt<\/em>, <em>Saturday Night Live<\/em> and <em>Girls5Eva<\/em>. Prior to that, he got his start by majoring in musical theater in college, where he authored several musicals and score compositions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:100%; max-width:1000px;\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((667\/1000)*100%);\">\n<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/MEAN-GIRLS-Creative-Team-L-R-Casey-Nicholaw-Tina-Fey-Jeff-Richmond-Nell-Benjamin-Photo-by-Jenny-Anderson.jpg?w=1000\" alt=\"Mean Girls Creative Team\" srcset=\"\" data-lazy-sizes=\"\" height=\"667\" width=\"1000\" decoding=\"\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-padding-tb-025\"><span class=\"a-font-secondary-s lrv-u-margin-r-025\">Casey Nicholaw, Tina Fey, Jeff-Richmond, Nell Benjamin<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                                    <cite class=\"a-font-accent-uppercase-xs lrv-u-color-grey-dark\">Jenny Anderson<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Following its 2017 debut and the 2020 Broadway pandemic shutdown, <em>Mean Girls<\/em> is back up and running for its U.S. tour, just in time for the ongoing development of the musical\u2019s film adaptation. \u201cI trust everybody that we put in place and the production company, they really do take care of it,\u201d Richmond says of his current involvement with the Broadway show and tour. \u201cWe have such good management on the road and people are taking care of it. Right now, the day-to-day is more about the movie adaptation that we\u2019re working on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    In 2020, it was announced that Lorne Michaels and Paramount Pictures were planning on adapting the musical version of the story into a movie. Michaels will return to produce, along with Fey who will pen the adaptation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>. Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. are set to direct, and Richmond and lyricist Nell Benjamin will also return to work on the film\u2019s music. It was also recently announced that Angourie Rice, Auli\u2019i Cravalho, Jaquel Spivey and Rene\u00e9 Rapp will star.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cWe\u2019re super involved with that,\u201d Richmond says. \u201cWhat we\u2019re trying to do [with the movie] is take the score that sounds like a Broadway score \u2014 in a good way \u2014 and [give] the movie a fresher palette. To make it sound more like stuff you want to listen to on Spotify, as opposed to when you\u2019re sitting eighth row center at a Broadway theater or the Pantages. It\u2019s kind of making it a fresher, younger take on the whole thing. We\u2019re kind of reinvented the music for the movie, so it\u2019s really fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Adds Nadina Hassan, who plays Regina, in the tour, \u201cWe\u2019re one of just a handful of girls who get to play these roles professionally and at this level, and that\u2019s such a blessing. Because now, when the movie comes out, what we\u2019ve done will also get to be shared with so many other people who maybe weren\u2019t able to come see us on tour or weren\u2019t able to go see the Broadway cast. I always feel so lucky to just be a part of this legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    After working together over the past three decades, Richmond and Fey have mastered the art of collaborating together, not to mention their most important collaboration \u2014 their family. \u201cDon\u2019t forget our children,\u201d he laughs. \u201cWe collaborated on our children and our dogs.\u201d As for working together on the musical, Richmond says it \u201ccouldn\u2019t be better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cWe know when to get out of each other\u2019s way when we\u2019re working together,\u201d the composer adds. \u201cLike who\u2019s taking this part? Who\u2019s doing that? Who needs to push harder on getting the script done for this? We\u2019re just around each other all the time. Same office, all the time. I got to see her and [Ashley Park who played Gretchen], and that was really, really cool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    With three women of color playing the Plastics on the current <em>Mean Girls<\/em> tour, Hassan emphasizes the importance of breaking down barriers on Broadway. \u201cGrowing up and going through college while the show was out, you didn\u2019t see that many people of color in those leading roles,\u201d she explains. \u201cSo to play Regina now is really cool, and it\u2019s something that I never expected. All three of us have sort of broken down different barriers in these roles, which is pretty amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    From movie to musical to movie musical, <em>Mean Girls<\/em> has become a teen cult classic, with quotes like \u201cSo fetch!\u201d and \u201cYou can\u2019t sit with us\u201d firmly established as fixtures in the pop culture of the early 2000s. Nearly 20 years after the original film\u2019s release, audiences still find their way back to it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cTina talks about that all the time,\u201d Richmond says about the show\u2019s impact across generations. \u201cIt\u2019s been a new <em>Mean Girls <\/em>for each generation that comes back around. You get them all going back to the original movie, but then suddenly, there\u2019s another kind of version and now a movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cI think part of it is that Tina Fey is hilarious,\u201d adds Morgan Ashley Bryant, who plays Karen in the show. \u201cShe wrote some super iconic lines that I think will probably stand the test of time. But I also think that the core values of the story is to get rid of all the extra mess and just support each other as women, which is why I think so many women and young girls resonate with the story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The Los Angeles run of <em>Mean Girls<\/em> comes to a close this upcoming weekend on Sunday, Jan. 29. Im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely following, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/meangirlsonbroadway.com\/tour\/\">the tour<\/a> heads to San Francisco from Jan. 31 to Feb. 26, followed by a week-long stint in San Diego and a final California stop in Costa Mesa from March 7 to March 19.
