Much of the document was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/nec\/briefing-room\/2023\/01\/27\/the-administrations-roadmap-to-mitigate-cryptocurrencies-risks\/\">addressed<\/a> to the U.S. Congress with the administration\u2019s legislative guidance.<\/p>\n<p>The authors of the statement outlined a two-pronged path forward. They wrote: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe have spent the past year identifying the risks of cryptocurrencies and acting to mitigate them using the authorities that the Executive Branch has.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The first element in the road map is the administration\u2019s \u201cfirst-ever\u201d comprehensive framework for digital asset development released in September. That document was based on reports mandated by the president\u2019s executive order on Ensuring Responsible Development of Digital Assets issued in March.<\/p>\n<p>Second, executive agencies are increasing enforcement and issuing new guidance. According to the statement, government agencies are developing public awareness programs \u201cto help consumers understand the risks of buying cryptocurrencies.\u201d It mentioned banking regulators in particular and encouraged them to continue their efforts. The statement was issued the same day the Fed denied digital asset Custodia Bank\u00a0membership in the Federal Reserve System.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We\u2019ll keep mitigating crypto risks by protecting investors and holding bad actors accountable. Its recommendations include expanding regulators\u2019 powers, strengthening disclosure requirements, strengthening penalties for misconduct, increasing funding for law enforcement and following the advice <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/system\/files\/261\/FSOC-Digital-Assets-Report-2022.pdf\">found<\/a> in the Financial Stability Oversight Council report mandated by the executive order. <\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related: Virginia county wants to put pension funds into DeFi yield farming<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The authors also took the opportunity to urge Congress not to do things too:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cLegislation should not greenlight mainstream institutions, like pension funds, to dive headlong into cryptocurrency markets.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Limiting such actions prevented the spread of the \u201cturmoil in cryptocurrencies\u201d to the broader financial system, they noted. <\/p>\n<p><template data-name=\"subscription_form\" data-type=\"law_decoded\"><\/template><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
