You&#8217;ll need to follow up by deleting individual leftover files to completely get rid of everything.<\/p>\n<p>Are you done with Microsoft 365 (formerly known as Office)? Maybe you\u2019re moving on from an outdated version, or simply unwilling to pay for another year of support. Here\u2019s how to remove the Office suite from your Mac altogether.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Uninstall_Office_for_Mac_by_Deleting_the_App\"><\/span>Uninstall Office for Mac by Deleting the App<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The simplest way to remove Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office for Mac apps from your Mac is to delete the apps from your Applications folder using Finder. This is the standard way of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/231496\/how-to-uninstall-applications-on-a-mac-everything-you-need-to-know\/\">deleting Mac apps, but it isn\u2019t exhaustive and normally requires a follow-up to delete junk that gets left behind.<\/p>\n<p>To begin, open a Finder window and click on Applications in the sidebar. You can also hit Shift+Command+G and type <code>\/Applications<\/code> followed by Enter.<\/p>\n<p>Now find the apps you want to delete. For Microsoft 365, Office 2019, and Office 2016, apps will be labeled individually as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft OneNote, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, and OneDrive.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re using Microsoft Office for Mac 2011, these apps will be in a separate folder. To delete the apps once and for all, empty the Trash either by opening it and clicking \u201cEmpty\u201d or by right-clicking and choosing \u201cEmpty Trash\u201d from the dock.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-863858\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/empty_trash.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Select &quot;Empty Trash&quot; to permanently erase items\" width=\"650\" height=\"310\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Microsoft Office for Mac or Microsoft 365 applications are now removed from your Mac, and the space they were occupying can be used for other things.<\/p>\n<p>This is probably good enough for most users, but if you want to <em>completely<\/em> remove all signs of Office or 365, there are some additional files you can get rid of too.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Completely_Delete_All_Office_and_365_Files_From_macOS\"><\/span>Completely Delete All Office and 365 Files From macOS<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are different steps to finalize the removal of Microsoft 365 and the older Office for Mac 2011.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Finish_Removing_Microsoft_365_Office_2019_and_Office_2016_for_Mac\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_2\">Finish Removing Microsoft 365, Office 2019, and Office 2016 for Mac<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In addition to removing the application files, Office 2016 and later also leaves behind some files in your Library folder. You can get there using Finder, simply open a Finder window and hit Shift+Command+G then enter <code>~\/Library\/Containers<\/code> and hit Enter.<\/p>\n<p>On macOS 11 or newer, highlight (by holding the Command key and clicking) these files:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Microsoft Error Reporting<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft Excel<\/li>\n<li>com.microsoft.netlib.shipassertprocess<\/li>\n<li>com.microsoft.Office365ServiceV2<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft Outlook<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft PowerPoint<\/li>\n<li>com.microsoft.RMS-XPCService<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft Word<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft OneNote (assuming you want to remove OneNote too)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On macOS 10 or newer, highlight (by holding the Command key and clicking) these:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>com.microsoft.errorreporting<\/li>\n<li>com.microsoft.Excel<\/li>\n<li>com.microsoft.netlib.shipassertprocess<\/li>\n<li>com.microsoft.Office365ServiceV2<\/li>\n<li>com.microsoft.Outlook<\/li>\n<li>com.microsoft.Powerpoint<\/li>\n<li>com.microsoft.RMS-XPCService<\/li>\n<li>com.microsoft.Word<\/li>\n<li>com.microsoft.onenote.mac<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now delete the files using the Command+Delete keyboard shortcut. Finally, hit Shift+Command+G and enter <code>~\/Library\/Group Containers<\/code> followed by enter. Highlight and delete the following, if present:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>UBF8T346G9.ms<\/li>\n<li>UBF8T346G9.Office<\/li>\n<li>UBF8T346G9.OfficeOsfWebHost<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Finish_Removing_Office_for_Mac_2011\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_3\">Finish Removing Office for Mac 2011<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re removing Office for Mac 2011, there are a few different files you\u2019ll need to delete to remove Office completely. Open Finder and hit Shift+Command+G then enter <code>~Library\/Preferences<\/code> followed by enter. Delete files starting with \u201ccom.microsoft\u201d from this folder.<\/p>\n<p>In Finder hit Shift+Command+G, enter <code>~Library\/Preferences<\/code>, and do the same to files starting with \u201ccom.microsoft\u201d in there too (except for .com.microsoft.autoupdate2.plist if you are still using Office for Mac 2016). Next, open the \u201cByHost\u201d folder within the Preferences folder and also delete \u201ccom.microsoft\u201d files.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-857531\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/remove_office_2011_mac.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Delete additional Office for Mac 2011 files\" width=\"650\" height=\"339\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Next, hit Shift+Command+G in Finder and enter <code>~Library\/Application Support\/Microsoft<\/code> followed by Enter. Delete the \u201cOffice\u201d folder.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, remove licensing helpers from the main Library folder. Hit Shift+Command+G in Finder and type <code>\/Library<\/code> to open your main Library folder. Now delete the following from the following folders within Library.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>com.microsoft.office.licensing.helper.plist from Library\/LaunchDemons<\/li>\n<li>com.microsoft.office.licensing.plist from Library\/Preferences<\/li>\n<li>com.microsoft.office.licensing.helper from Library\/PrivilegedHelperTools<\/li>\n<li>the \u201cMicrosoft\u201d folder from Library\/Application Support<\/li>\n<li>the \u201cMicrosoft\u201d folder from Library\/Fonts<\/li>\n<li>any files that begin \u201cOffice2011_\u201d from Library\/Receipts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Remove_Any_Dock_Icons_Left_Over_and_Empty_Trash\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_4\">Remove Any Dock Icons Left Over and Empty Trash<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Lastly, any dock items you might still have should be removed. You can do this by clicking and dragging the dock icon until you see \u201cRemove\u201d appear, then release. Finally, open the Trash and click \u201cEmpty\u201d to permanently delete everything you just removed.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_to_Do_If_Free_Space_Isnt_Showing\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_5\">What to Do If Free Space Isn\u2019t Showing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019ve deleted everything but still aren\u2019t seeing as much free space as you\u2019d have hoped, give your Mac a restart by clicking Apple &gt; Restart. There are lots of free options to choose from, including a free online version of the Office suite at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.office.com\">Office.com<\/a>. Another alternative is to use Google\u2019s tools which integrate nicely into <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=e7eab128eb8d1c53e14db14f4c632447&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fdrive.google.com&amp;cuid=xid:{xid}&amp;___trxnet=vg\">Google Drive<\/a>. This includes <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/pages\/id409201541?at=1010l392g&amp;ct=htg857514\">Pages<\/a> for word processing, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/numbers\/id409203825?at=1010l392g&amp;ct=htg857514\">Numbers<\/a> for spreadsheets, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/keynote\/id409183694?at=1010l392g&amp;ct=htg857514\">Keynote<\/a> for presentations.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, a fully open source and cross-platform alternative can be had using the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.libreoffice.org\">LibreOffice<\/a> suite. This includes Writer and Calc for word processing and spreadsheets, plus tools like Impress for presentations, Draw for diagrams, Base for databases, and Math for formulas.
