Research is divided.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>Two\u00a0mass shootings\u00a0in California last week that killed dozens ofpeople in public spaces, as well as a third attack days earlier that killed six family members in their home, have again raised questions about whether such violent incidents inspire new ones.<\/p>\n<p>Data on mass public shootings going back to 1966 suggests such attacks are becoming more frequent, said James Densley, co-founder of the Violence Project, a nonprofit research center.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s not yet clear if shootings that come\u00a0close together in time are intertwined.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You find even in random simulations, there are times when there\u2019s a cluster and times when there are not,&#8221; said James Alan Fox, a criminology professor at Northeastern University who serves on USA TODAY\u2019s Board of Contributors.<\/p>\n<p>.oembed-frame {width:100%;height:100%;margin:0;border:0;}<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-frame\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Are_mass_shootings_happening_more_often\"><\/span>Are mass shootings happening more often?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The frequency of fatal mass shootings has increased from 23 a year in 2010 to 27 a year through the end of 2022, based on five-year averages of data gathered by USA TODAY, The Associated Press and Northeastern University.<\/p>\n<p>That includes incidents in which at least four people were fatally shot, excluding the shooter, and a variety of motives \u2013 from hate crimes to family violence and gang-related attacks.<\/p>\n<p>The number of incidents categorized as caused by hate, terrorism or indiscriminate violence, which tend to draw significant public attention, has increased from two a year to five. Similarly, attacks in public places like schools, hospitals and malls have increased from seven a year to 10 a year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">OPINION: <\/strong>Gun violence is a pandemic. We need to act like it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_trends_in_gun_violence_generally\"><\/span>What are trends in\u00a0gun violence generally?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Overall, the number of U.S. gun deaths\u00a0soared to records levels during the COVID-19 pandemic, and firearms became the leading cause of death\u00a0among\u00a0children and teens.<\/p>\n<p>There are shootings every day in the United States, and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gunviolencearchive.org\/past-tolls\">about 20,000 people<\/a>\u00a0have been fatally shot each year since 2020, according to the\u00a0nonprofit Gun Violence Archive. About another 20,000 have died by firearm suicide, according to the nonprofit.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_have_there_been_strings_of_high-profile_mass_shootings\"><\/span>When have there been strings of high-profile mass shootings?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Densley, of the Violence Project,\u00a0pointed to several examples of mass shootings that h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened close together in recent years.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>August\u00a02019<\/strong>: A gunman killed 23 people\u00a0at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. The next day, a gunman killed nine people\u00a0in Dayton, Ohio. At the end of the month, a gunman killed\u00a0seven people\u00a0in Midland and Odessa, Texas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>March\u00a02021<\/strong>: A gunman killed eight people\u00a0at Atlanta-area spas. Days later, a gunman killed 10 people at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado. Days after that, a gunman killed four people at an office in Orange County, California.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Summer\u00a02022<\/strong>: In May, there were mass shootings at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, and an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. In June, it was a hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In July, a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>November\u00a02022<\/strong>: A gunman opened fire at an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado, killing five people. Two days later, a store manager killed\u00a0six people at a Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Do_mass_shootings_prompt_more_mass_shootings\"><\/span>Do\u00a0mass shootings prompt more mass shootings?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Available studies have reached different conclusions on whether one mass shooting raises the likelihood that others will follow soon after.<\/p>\n<p>Research on mass shootings is limited,\u00a0in part because of a congressional amendment that for more than two decades barred federal public health funding from being used to study gun violence.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, a team of researchers\u00a0at Arizona State and Northeastern Illinois universities analyzed the USA TODAY\/AP\/Northeastern database for trends. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4489652\/\">It found<\/a> the probability of a new fatal mass shooting increased for 13 days after each incident, an effect that held up when looking at school shootings, in particular.<\/p>\n<p>Densley said the Violence Project has noticed an &#8220;anecdotal&#8221;\u00a0increase in clusters of high-profile mass shootings but is\u00a0working on an analysis to determine whether the apparent clusters are statistically significant.<\/p>\n<p>Fox, meanwhile, said the clustering some people see in lists of mass shootings is the result of pure chance. He said the 2015 study didn\u2019t take into account important differences in types of shootings and the level of attention they receive.<\/p>\n<p>A 2021\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/2330443X.2021.1932645\">study by Fox and others<\/a> found no short-term &#8220;contagion&#8221;\u00a0effect linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>paper and television coverage of mass shootings.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_about_longer-term_effects_on_other_shooters\"><\/span>What about longer-term effects on other shooters?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In public health research, contagion measures whether one event increases the likelihood of a new one in the im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te aftermath, similar to how the spread of virus can quickly escalate case counts.<\/p>\n<p>Copycat attacks, in contrast, are not triggered by the timing of the latest killing seen on cable news. Instead, those shooters are motivated\u00a0by a previous event, often years prior. For instance, some shootings \u2013 such as the attack on Columbine High School in Colorado in\u00a01999 \u2013 have been mentioned by later killers as part of their motive.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers said it\u2019s rare to be able to trace such a motive directly but note evidence suggests teens can be particularly influenced.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Are_there_ways_to_prevent_copycat_killings\"><\/span>Are there ways to prevent copycat killings?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Public campaigns like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dontnamethem.org\/\">Don\u2019t Name Them<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nonotoriety.com\/\">No Notoriety<\/a> demand that the news media not publish the identity or personal details of mass killers. The campaigns argue that such attention inspires other attackers seeking fame.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fox disagrees with the premise, saying it\u2019s the shooting itself \u2013 not the shooter \u2013 that could cause contagion. In the El Paso Walmart shooting that targeted Latinos, he said, white supremacists &#8220;applauded&#8221; the killing without knowing much about the gunman.<\/p>\n<p>Fox acknowledges, however, that some news outlets go overboard and provide details about the shooter that shift the focus from the harm caused.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sherry Towers, a data scientist at Arizona State University who led the 2015 study on shooting &#8220;contagion,&#8221;\u00a0said news media coverage reflects a broader appetite for information about mass shootings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The public is actually reading the details obsessively, more than they need to inform themselves. It\u2019s almost as a form of lurid entertainment.
