“#CDC now claims people without COVID-19 symptoms may not need a test<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has revised its guidance for coronavirus testing to say that people without symptoms don\u2019t necessarily need to be tested \u2014 even if they\u2019ve been in close contact with an infected individual.<\/p>\n

Previously, the CDC recommended that anyone who was recently exposed, or suspected they were exposed to the virus be tested.<\/p>\n

The new guidelines, posted on Monday, now state that those who have been in close contact \u2014 typically defined as being within six feet for at least 15 minutes \u2014 with someone who is COVID-positive \u201cdo not necessarily need a test\u201d if they\u2019re asymptomatic.<\/p>\n

However, the CDC noted exceptions, such as for \u201cvulnerable\u201d individuals, or if healthcare professionals or state and local officials recommend testing.<\/p>\n

The sudden change concerned some experts, who noted that people without symptoms are responsible for a large chunk of transmissions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis makes no sense,\u201d Dr. Leana Wen, a physician and former Baltimore health commissioner tweeted about the revised guidelines.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople without symptoms account for up to 50% of transmission,\u201d Wen wrote. \u201cWe need MORE testing, not less.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Ravina Kullar, an infectious disease expert in California, told Fox News<\/a> that the CDC\u2019s new advice was \u201ctroubling.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAn individual has a high probability of getting the virus from close contact with someone that has had the virus; why would he\/she not be recommended to get tested?,\u201d Kullar told the outlet.<\/p>\n

The CDC itself has emphasized that transmissions of the virus by asymptomatic people, or by those not yet showing symptoms, is a major factor in the spreading of the disease.<\/p>\n

The agency noted last month that, at best, 40 percent of those infected with COVID-19 don\u2019t show symptoms.<\/p>\n

A request for comment to the CDC wasn\u2019t immedia<\/a>tely returned. A spokesman for the US Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement that the revision was made \u201cto reflect current evidence and best public health practices.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
