Yet understanding how many miles you\u2019ll earn, and how much these miles are worth, can be anything but simple.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       These reward programs drive a huge part of airlines\u2019 business. For example, American Airlines<br \/>\n        AAL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209207041\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.86%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       AAdvantage members spent $1,220 on flights on average in 2019 compared to $408 for non-members, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing. So airlines have a strong incentive to earn frequent flyers\u2019 loyalty with high-value rewards.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet for customers, parsing the many variables that go into this value proposition isn\u2019t easy. For many it can be downright daunting.<\/p>\n<p>A survey in December 2021 and January 2022 of 2,150 U.S. consumers by Arrivia, a travel <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> company, found that 45% of Americans say they don\u2019t know if they\u2019re getting the best value from their travel rewards.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, you don\u2019t have to figure it out for yourself. NerdWallet collected hundreds of data points of airline rewards programs to determine\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/travel\/most-valuable-airline-rewards-program?utm_campaign=ct_prod&amp;utm_content=1303291&amp;utm_medium=wire&amp;utm_source=syndication&amp;utm_term=anne-stanleymarketwatch-com\" class=\"icon none\">which one offers the highest overall value<\/a>. And in 2023, that loyalty program is: Frontier Miles by Frontier Airlines<br \/>\n        ULCC,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/211317788\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.08%<\/bg-quote><span>.<\/span>\n      <\/p>\n<p>Yes, an airline better known for its low fares and high fees beat out much bigger competitors like American and Delta Air Lines<br \/>\n        DAL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200327741\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.85%<\/bg-quote><span>.<\/span><br \/>\n      \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, how did Frontier come to be the most valuable airline rewards program this year?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t miss:<\/strong> \u2018This is one of the coolest places I\u2019ve ever seen\u2019: Splurge on a stayover \u2014 or grab a cocktail during a layover \u2014 at this nostalgic airport hotel<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Miles_flown_not_dollars_spent\"><\/span><strong>Miles flown, not dollars spent<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>To determine the most valuable airline reward program, NerdWallet performed a deep-dive analysis of the two most important variables:\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      How many miles you earn with a program.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      How much these miles are worth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With these, we determined a \u201crewards rate\u201d for each airline program, which is roughly similar to a cash-back rate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetDynamic\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetDynamic\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"dynamic-inset-container article__inset__dynamic \">\n<div class=\"infogram-embed\" data-id=\"4377948a-c6c7-4105-9ed0-1acf21830ad1\" data-type=\"interactive\" data-title=\"2023 Airline Earning Rates\"><\/div>\n<p><script>!function(e,i,n,s){var t=\"InfogramEmbeds\",d=e.getElementsByTagName('script')[0];if(window[t]&&window[t].initialized)window[t].process&&window[t].process();else if(!e.getElementById(n)){var o=e.createElement('script');o.async=1,o.id=n,o.src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed-loader-min.js\",d.parentNode.insertBefore(o,d)}}(document,0,'infogram-async');<\/script><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       Basically, for every $100 you spend on airfare, you can expect to get about $10.10 back in value from the top airline rewards program, Frontier Airlines, and $3.40 back from the bottom performer, Spirit Airlines<br \/>\n        SAVE,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205782179\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.25%<\/bg-quote><span>.<\/span><br \/>\n       Alaska<br \/>\n        ALK,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200972303\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.69%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Hawaiian Airlines<br \/>\n        HA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203188135\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.34%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       also do well, while the \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/travel\/delta-vs-united-vs-american?utm_campaign=ct_prod&amp;utm_content=1303291&amp;utm_medium=wire&amp;utm_source=syndication&amp;utm_term=anne-stanleymarketwatch-com\" class=\"icon none\">big three<\/a>\u201d of American, Delta and United<br \/>\n        UAL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205037281\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.07%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       are clustered near the bottom.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You might be wondering, \u201cWhat\u2019s going on here?\u201d Frontier and Spirit Airlines are both budget carriers that offer no-frills fares and loads of add-on fees. Why does one offer more than double the return on spending as the other?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In our analysis, it didn\u2019t come down to how much the miles are worth for these programs. We value Frontier miles at 0.8 cent each. What mattered was how these miles were earned: either by the distance flown or the cost of the fare.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Airlines that award miles based on the distance flown, such as Alaska and Frontier, performed much better than those that award them based on money spent. Distance-based programs simply dole out more miles per dollar spent on the airfare.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Plus<\/strong>: Read this before taking an Uber in Cancun, where violence between taxi drivers and ride-share <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>s is heating up<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_Frontier_really_the_best_Well_%E2%80%A6\"><\/span><strong>Is Frontier really the best? Well \u2026\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Frontier\u2019s ultra-low fares are part of its success in this analysis because it means flyers earn even more miles per dollar spent. If a traveler spends $200 on a 2,000-mile flight with Frontier, they\u2019ll earn 10 miles per dollar. The same traveler spending $300 on an Alaska flight would earn 6.7 miles per dollar.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s where things get a little complicated. Any money spent on fees with these distance-based carriers is essentially wasted, in terms of earning miles, lowering the number of miles earned per dollar spent.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Frontier also has a\u00a0much worse elite status program overall\u00a0than Alaska and most other airlines, and other big drawbacks, such as miles that expire after only six months of inactivity (yikes \u2014 as many don\u2019t expire at all).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So yes, on paper, Frontier offers the best raw return value in miles on dollars spent. But in practice, full-service airlines such as Alaska, Hawaiian and JetBlue<br \/>\n        JBLU,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207639051\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.51%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       \u2014 positions 2, 3 and 4 in our analysis \u2014 are still probably better bets. But American, Delta and United, which make up a huge slice of the air travel pie, all have spending-based programs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s a frequent traveler trying to decide between these airline rewards programs to do?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Just as Costco<br \/>\n        COST,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/201191698\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.00%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       probably offers the best value per dollar spent on many items, but isn\u2019t practical or feasible for many food shoppers (who needs that much cinnamon?), there\u2019s more to consider than pure value. Ask yourself:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      Which airline offers the best routes from my home airport?\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      What about\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/travel\/most-reliable-airlines?utm_campaign=ct_prod&amp;utm_content=1303291&amp;utm_medium=wire&amp;utm_source=syndication&amp;utm_term=anne-stanleymarketwatch-com\" class=\"icon none\">operational reliability<\/a>\u00a0(ahem, Southwest,<br \/>\n        LUV,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/201071949\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.12%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       ahem)?\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Which has the best partner airlines for international destinations?\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The list goes on, but the point is that no single variable determines the \u201cbest\u201d airline for you.
