\n City Councilman Ben Kallos recently managed to permanently debunk any rumor that he has a spine.<\/p>\n

The Manhattan Democrat, already running in next year\u2019s borough president race, sent out a mass email this month denouncing the city\u2019s decision to zero out its graffiti-removal budget. He called for \u201ckeeping the city clean\u201d and vowed to prioritize removing illegal street \u201cart.\u201d<\/p>\n

And he explained: \u201cGraffiti makes leeway for property crimes and gun violence, and make [sic] things harder for our small businesses as they fight to survive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oops! Lawyer Sarah Steiner tweeted that Kallos had crossed a line: \u201cSomeone just discovered broken windows policing theory.\u201d That clearly sent shudders down Kallos\u2019 (limp) back.<\/p>\n

Broken windows policing (cracking down on minor offenses to head off larger ones) is a no-no for the left. Never mind that it helped cut the city\u2019s murder rate nearly 90 percent since it began under Mayor Rudy Giuliani in the \u201990s. Or that scrapp<\/a>ing it under Mayor de Blasio has fueled violent crime.<\/p>\n

So that lone tweet had Kallos backtracking at light speed in another email the next day.<\/p>\n

First, he threw his staff under the bus, blaming \u201can error on my team\u2019s part to let language like this go out under my name.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he groveled: \u201cI do NOT support broken windows policing,\u201d and \u201cI don\u2019t believe that graffiti leads to violence in any way.\u201d He\u2019s never backed \u201cpolicing for minor infractions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead of policing graffiti, he pointed to his work getting \u201cfunding to pay formerly homeless and justice involved New Yorkers to help keep our streets clean.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJustice-involved,\u201d of course, is PC-speak for .\u2009.\u2009. criminals.<\/p>\n

So far-lefties can rest easy: Ben Kallos will always put progressive cant ahead of effective policing.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
