Ron DeSantis (R) said the course \u201clacked educational value\u201d and would not go forward in his state\u2019s schools.<\/p>\n<p>The original interdisciplinary course, which is being piloted in 60 schools around the nation this school year, included lessons on Black queer studies, the Black Lives Matter movement, Black feminist literary thought, the reparations movement and the Black struggle in the 21st century.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apcentral.collegeboard.org\/media\/pdf\/ap-african-american-studies-course-framework.pdf\">a new framework<\/a>\u00a0released Wednesday noticeably removed Black queer studies from its coursework, along with Black writers and scholars associated with critical race theory. The topic of Black Lives Matter is now optional, and \u201cBlack conservatism\u201d has been introduced as a potential research subject.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo wake up on the first day of Black History Month to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> of white men in positions of privilege horse trading essential and inextricably linked parts of Black History, which is American history, is infuriating,\u201d David J. Johns, executive director of the National Black Justice Coalition, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Johns said the College Board had \u201ccapitulated\u201d to DeSantis\u2019s \u201cextremist anti-Black censorship\u201d and that the new course is an \u201cinsult to the lived experiences of millions of Black Americans\u201d across the nation, including their ancestors and their legacy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe assault on my existence feels like gaslighting,\u201d he said. \u201cThe distortions of fact-based truths and suppression of how beautifully diverse Black people have built this country for free should infuriate everyone who purports to care about democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lives, contributions, and stories of Black trans, queer, and non-binary\/non-conforming people matter and should not be diminished or erased,\u201d he added. \u201cBlack history has always been queer. You cannot teach Black history while erasing members of our community and the contributions made to our community and this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prominent LGBTQ+ Black figures include Bayard Rustin, who, as a key adviser to Martin Luther King Jr., helped organize the March on Washington; renowned author and essayist James Baldwin, known for novels including \u201cAnother Country\u201d and \u201cGiovanni\u2019s Room\u201d; and Marsha P. Johnson, a trailblazing transgender activist.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Florida state Sen. Shevrin Jones\u00a0(D), the state\u2019s first openly gay senator, said\u00a0these course changes are the result of DeSantis, who is weighing a 2024 presidential run, \u201cginning up culture war after culture war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is part of a larger war on our very ability to think, question, and engage in our democracy,\u201d Jones said in a statement to The Hill. \u201cIt is a national attempt to redirect how students learn.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe techniques of distortion, denial, and distraction are all part of the right\u2019s dangerous efforts to shape public perceptions and undermine trust in the truth,\u201d he added. \u201cThe people deserve better.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Last week, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D)\u00a0had warned\u00a0the College Board that his state would reject a revised AP African American studies course \u201cdesigned to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ease extremists like the Florida Governor and his allies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIllinois expects any AP course offered on African American Studies to include a factual accounting of history, including the role played by black queer Americans,\u201d Pritzker said in a letter to David Coleman, CEO of the College Board.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Florida\u2019s Department of Education is reviewing the revisions to ensure they follow state law, which restricts\u00a0how topics such as racism can be taught in schools and prohibits any instruction that could make someone feel \u201cpersonal responsibility\u201d for historic wrongdoings because of their race, sex or national origin.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>In a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/31\/opinion\/ron-desantis-black-history.html\">New York Times op-ed<\/a>, NAACP Legal Defense Fund director-counsel Janai Nelson said censoring AP African American studies may \u201csow the racial divisions that enable white supremacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe losses to our nation, if this broad attack on our shared history is allowed to continue, are incalculable,\u201d Nelson wrote. \u201cNot only will it breed a generation of Americans indoctrinated by ignorance; it will deny them the analytical skills to understand the complex history of this experimental democracy, as well as the historical grounding to sustain it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
