Speaker <strong>Kevin McCarthy<\/strong> (R-Calif.) says no one wants it to happen. And the Federal Reserve chairman said on Wednesday that it\u2019s up to Congress to prevent U.S. default by voting to let the Treasury Department borrow to pay the country\u2019s bills.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>After spending an hour together in the Oval Office during a much-anticipated t\u00eate-\u00e0-t\u00eate about the debt limit and other topics, Biden and McCarthy agreed they see the problem differently.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI don\u2019t want to put any words in his mouth,\u201d<\/em> McCarthy told reporters while standing in the White House driveway on a cold day after a meeting he sought, The Hill\u2019s Brett Samuels reported.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI thought it was a very good discussion and we walked out saying we would continue the discussion,\u201d<\/em> McCarthy said. <em>\u201cI think there is an opportunity here to come to an agreement on both sides. <\/em>\u2026 <em>My role right now is to make sure we have a sensible, responsible ability to raise the debt ceiling but not continue this runaway spending.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Biden told the Speaker that he would not negotiate on the limit, but is open to a <em>\u201cseparate discussion with congressional leaders about how to reduce the deficit and control the national debt while continuing to grow the economy<\/em>,\u201d according to a White House summary of the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy would not make any explicit commitments that the U.S. would not default, which the president wants. But the Speaker spoke positively.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/01\/us\/politics\/biden-mccarthy-debt-limit.html\">The New York Times<\/a>: Biden, McCarthy discuss debt limit as financial crisis looms.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"><strong><em>\u201cThere is nothing in there with me walking away that does not believe that at the end of the day we can come to an agreement,\u201d<\/em> <\/strong>McCarthy said.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">What that agreement will be is still months away, according to veterans of previous debt ceiling battles. Senate Minority Leader <strong>Mitch McConnell<\/strong> (R-Ky.) \u2014 who helped broker last-minute compromises during past budget impasses and the 2011 debt ceiling battle (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2023\/2\/1\/23581229\/debt-ceiling-crisis-2011\">Vox<\/a>) \u2014 called for good-faith negotiations on Wednesday while accusing Senate Majority Leader <strong>Charles Schumer<\/strong> (D-N.Y.) of hypocrisy when it comes to the statutory cap on borrowing, which Treasury reached last month (The Hill).<\/p>\n<p>Federal Reserve Chairman <strong>Jerome Powell<\/strong> put the responsibility on Congress to lift the borrowing limit. <em>\u201cThere is only one way forward here and that is for Congress to raise the debt ceiling,\u201d <\/em>he said Wednesday during a press conference to announce another interest rate hike. \u201c<em>Any deviations from that path would be highly risky and no one should assume that the Fed can protect the economy<\/em>\u201d (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/livecoverage\/federal-reserve-meeting-interest-rate-hike-february-2023\/card\/congress-s-job-to-raise-the-debt-ceiling-powell-NbwzfSBnH0ZSPnF6kJVu\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a>).<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Anxieties that the United States might default because of the partisan impasse over accumulated debt and federal spending have revived talk that the Treasury could prioritize debt payments to prevent disaster. Treasury officials and the administration have rejected that possibility.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI believe that Congress will wind up acting as it must in the end to raise the debt ceiling<\/em>,\u201d Powell said, eager to discourage the idea that the central bank would resolve political stalemate. <em>\u201cI believe it will happen<\/em>\u201d (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/fed-chairman-on-debt-ceiling-theres-only-one-way-forward-here-221024382.html\">Yahoo Finance<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy says the Pentagon\u2019s budget is on the table as Republicans seek to negotiate savings over a 10-year budget window. His caucus has not identified where members envision cuts but have said <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social<\/a> Security and Medicare will not be touched. McCarthy has agreed with conservative lawmakers to cap all new discretionary spending at fiscal 2022 levels, which would amount to a $75 billion cut in the defense budget. The dovish takeaway among market investors, despite cautious Fed language, was a sunny-side-up bet that the central bank is nearing the end of rate hikes to tame inflation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Open Market Committee announced a quarter-point rate hike, moderated from six consecutive larger rate increases in an effort to bring down inflation. It\u2019s the smallest rate hike since March, which will lift the federal funds rate to a range of 4.5 to 4.75 percent as the central bank pushes toward a projected target rate of 5.1 percent (The Hill).<\/p>\n<p>Powell cautioned that while it is \u201cgood\u201d that \u201cdeflationary\u201d conditions are evident in some economic sectors, price stability has not been attained and \u201cthe job is not fully done.\u201d His upshot: <em>\u201cGiven our outlook, I don\u2019t see us cutting rates this year, if our outlook comes true.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe Committee anticipates that ongoing increases in the target range will be appropriate in order to attain a stance of monetary policy that is sufficiently restrictive to return inflation to 2 percent over time,\u201d<\/em> the FOMC said in its statement.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c<\/em>[Powell]<em> did go back and forth giving you both sides of the argument,\u201d<\/em> said former Goldman Sachs Chief Operating Officer<strong> Gary Cohn<\/strong>, a former economic adviser in the Trump White House. <em>\u201cThe only thing he kept hanging his hat on was the labor market.
