The education community shares mixed reactions to ChatGPT<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>Since ChatGPT debuted\u00a0in November, the nation&#8217;s largest school districts\u00a0have banned the artificial intelligence\u00a0chatbot, concerned students will use the speedy text generator to cheat or plagiarize.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Teachers and\u00a0professors\u00a0are concerned the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> makes it far too easy for students to use it as a shortcut for essays or other writing assignments and exams\u00a0and that it generates content in a way that\u00a0can\u00a0bypass\u00a0software that detects when students use information that&#8217;s not their\u00a0own work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jumping to ban the tool may not be the right course of action, however,\u00a0education technology experts say: Because AI will be a part of young people&#8217;s future, it must also be a part of the classroom now.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everyone is talking about cheating. (GPT stands for\u00a0Generative Pre-trained Transformer.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">More: <\/strong>Artificial Intelligence grading your \u2018neuroticism\u2019? Welcome to colleges&#8217; new frontier<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for San Francisco-based software company\u00a0OpenAI, which owns the tool, said the company\u00a0&#8220;made ChatGPT available as a research preview to learn from real-world use, which we believe is a critical part of developing and deploying capable, safe AI systems.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On the website, it\u00a0lists ChatGPT&#8217;s positive\u00a0attributes as\u00a0its capacity to &#8220;remember what user\u00a0said earlier in conversation&#8221; and\u00a0&#8220;allow user\u00a0to provide follow-up corrections,\u201d and how\u00a0it&#8217;s trained &#8220;to decline in<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ropriate requests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company is\u00a0upfront\u00a0about some of the technology&#8217;s flaws.<\/p>\n<p>Per <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/blog\/chatgpt\/\">OpenAI&#8217;s website<\/a>, the chatbot occasionally &#8220;generat(es)\u00a0incorrect information&#8221; and &#8220;produc(es)\u00a0harmful instructions or biased content.&#8221; It lists a third issue: having\u00a0\u201climited knowledge of world and events after 2021.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>USA TODAY this month asked the chatbot,\u00a0\u201cWhy are schools banning ChatGPT?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not aware of any schools that have banned ChatGPT specifically,&#8221; the chatbot replied. &#8220;However, it is possible that some schools or educational institutions may have policies in place that prohibit the use of certain technology in the classroom or during exams, particularly if it is deemed to be a distraction or a potential aid for cheating. Additionally, the use of AI models such as ChatGPT raises ethical concerns around the potential misuse of the technology, such as impersonation or spreading misinformation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Therefore, some schools may choose to ban or restrict the use of such technologies as a precautionary measure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">What\u00a0is ChatGPT?\u00a0<\/strong>Everything to know about OpenAI&#8217;s free A.I. essay writer and how it works<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_are_schools_banning_ChatGPT\"><\/span>Why are schools banning ChatGPT?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In the recent past, school\u00a0officials&#8217; concerns about technology involved\u00a0students tapping sites including Wikipedia and SparkNotes to gather information without doing their own research or reading.<\/p>\n<p>With access to artificial intelligence platforms\u00a0that\u00a0help with grammar, writing and more,\u00a0teachers and kids alike must learn how to work with it\u00a0to prepare for\u00a0the future, said Culatta, whose\u00a0organization offers training for teachers on using AI in classrooms.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>More training is the plan in the Los Angeles Unified School District, spokesperson Shannon Hebert said. LAUSD\u00a0temporarily blocked access to ChatGPT and the OpenAI website in December \u201cto protect academic dishonesty, while a risk\/benefit assessment is conducted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New York City&#8217;s<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Department of Education\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ny.chalkbeat.org\/2023\/1\/3\/23537987\/nyc-schools-ban-chatgpt-writing-artificial-intelligence\">blocked<\/a>\u00a0ChatGPT this month from devices and networks owned by schools across the state. Universities including Princeton <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyprincetonian.com\/article\/2023\/01\/university-declines-ban-chatgpt-releases-faculty-guidance-for-usage\">are refusing<\/a> to ban\u00a0the chatbot,\u00a0instead advising professors\u00a0to set their own policies. And NYU professors <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/n7zxe7\/nyu-professors-tell-their-students-do-not-use-chatgpt\">are\u00a0advising<\/a>\u00a0students not to use ChatGPT, Vice reported.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">More: <\/strong>Millions of college students use Chegg, which professors say enables cheating \u2013 and possibly blackmail<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:inherit\">What should schools consider when it comes to ChatGPT?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Blocking a particular platform may be far less effective than schools think.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If they&#8217;re not using it\u00a0in their classes, they can use it at home and they can use it on their\u00a0personal devices,&#8221; said\u00a0Adam Phyall, an<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>education technology expert and\u00a0director of professional learning and leadership\u00a0from\u00a0All4Ed, a national nonprofit that advocates for traditionally underserved students.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI&#8217;s platform is one of the first of its kind to successfully generate a paragraph\u00a0in response to a user&#8217;s questions, but there are others like it out there.
