Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) from the Foreign Affairs Committee, accusing the Republicans of adopting a double standard by ignoring antisemitism in their own ranks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jeffries pointed to comments from several House Republicans that compared President Biden to Hitler; questioned the loyalty of an American-based Israeli lobbying group; and joked about the recent attack on the husband of former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a double, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>le, quadruple-and-beyond standard when you think about all of the [GOP] members \u2014 these are just three \u2014 who have engaged in highly offensive, at times antisemitic, behavior, rhetoric [and] hate,\u201d\u00a0Jeffries said during a press briefing in the Capitol.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Omar, a Somali refugee and one of just three Muslims of Congress, had come under fire several years ago for a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of comments deemed antisemitic by members of both parties, and Republicans wasted no time using their new majority to push a resolution kicking her off of the Foreign Affairs panel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The vote, which took place Thursday afternoon, passed along strict partisan lines, 218 to 211. Republican Rep. David Joyce (Ohio), voted present.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not saying she can\u2019t have committees,\u201d Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said Wednesday evening. \u201cBut to sit on Foreign Affairs, I worry about \u2026 what the rest of the world looks at, every single word that is said there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The most prominent of Omar\u2019s controversies occurred in 2019, just weeks after she first arrived on Capitol Hill, when she\u00a0tweeted that lawmaker support for Israel is \u201call about the Benjamins, baby\u201d \u2014\u00a0a remark that sparked charges of antisemitism from Jewish advocates and widespread condemnation on Capitol Hill.<\/p>\n<p>Jeffries made no attempt to whitewash Omar\u2019s comments, saying \u201cshe has used antisemitic tropes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cRep. Omar certainly has made mistakes,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But he also emphasized how Democrats, including Omar, responded to the Benjamins\u2019 episode four years ago, contrasting it with the inaction from McCarthy and other GOP leaders to similarly offensive remarks from Republican members.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Feb. 10, Omar issued the objectionable tweet. On Feb. 11, House Democratic leaders \u2014\u00a0from then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on down \u2014\u00a0issued a statement condemning her remarks as \u201cdeeply offensive\u201d and calling on Omar \u201cto im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely apologize.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Hours later, Omar did just that, issuing a statement saying she never intended to offend \u201cmy constituents or Jewish Americans as a whole.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is why I unequivocally apologize,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On March 7, the House\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/03\/07\/701074291\/house-votes-to-condemn-anti-semitism-after-rep-omars-comments\">approved a resolution<\/a>\u00a0to condemn all forms of antisemitism, though it did not mention Omar by name. The vote was 407 to 23, with Omar voting in favor of the measure. The 23 \u201cno\u201d votes all came from Republicans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThere has been accountability; Ilhan Omar has apologized; she has indicated that she\u2019ll learn from her mistakes,\u201d Jeffries said. \u201cSo this is not about accountability, it\u2019s about political revenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, Jeffries pointed to remarks from Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) in September of 2021 after Washington\u2019s largest pro-Israel lobby, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), condemned his opposition to a resolution condemning an attack on Israel.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow is THIS not foreign interference in our elections?\u201d Massie, a libertarian-leaning lawmaker who votes against virtually all measures dabbling in foreign affairs,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepThomasMassie\/status\/1442529579978018816\">tweeted at the time<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Jeffries wondered why GOP leaders didn\u2019t race to punish Massie, the way they\u2019re now punishing Omar.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not an antisemitic trope? That\u2019s not playing into dangerous stereotypes about the Jewish community here in America, suggesting that they have dual loyalty? AIPAC is engaging in foreign interference?\u201d Jeffries said. \u201cAIPAC is an American-based organization.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo this day not a single House Republican leader has said a word \u2014\u00a0a word \u2014\u00a0about Thomas Massie,\u201d he added. \u201cBut he\u2019s been rewarded with a seat on the powerful House Judiciary Committee.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Jeffries also highlighted another tweet from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), which depicted Biden as Hitler, and a third from freshman Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.), which mocked October\u2019s violent attack on Paul Pelosi, 82, who was hit on the head with a hammer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpeaker McCarthy knows I strongly disagree with him, and them, on this issue,\u201d Jeffries said. \u201cAnd this type of poisonous, toxic double standard is going to complicate the relationship moving forward between House Democrats and House Republicans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy had been vowing to remove Democrats from committees since 2021, when Pelosi brought votes to strip Greene and Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) from their committee seats. Greene had promoted the assassination of prominent Democrats, including Pelosi, on social media, while Gosar had posted an <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/anime-manga\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"6\" title=\"Anime || Manga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anime<\/a> video depicting the beheading of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.). Neither lawmaker was disciplined by McCarthy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Jeffries, echoing the argument of other Democrats, said there\u2019s a distinction to be made between the removal of lawmakers like Greene and Gosar, who promoted violence, and the ousting of lawmakers like Omar, Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), who were punished for policy differences.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe line should be drawn when there are members of Congress who are actively threatening violence against colleagues \u2026 Violence that we should actually take seriously in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 violent insurrection,\u201d Jeffries said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jeffries declined to say if Democrats will carve out a special position for Omar within the caucus after she is removed from the Foreign Affairs panel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe will continue to productively serve,\u201d he said. \u201cBut we\u2019ll cross that bridge, in terms of precision, when we get to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
