Rather than require any specific course, most universities fall back on broad \u201cdistribution requirements,\u201d mandating that students take a STEM course here, an arts course there, to explore the academic world beyond their major.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At schools with comparatively lax distribution rules, no one must study any one discipline, let alone take a prescribed course. As a result, students can graduate from Amherst, Brown, Johns Hopkins or UCLA without ever taking a class in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> or history or foreign language.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Supporters of core learning say those schools \u2014 indeed, most American universities \u2014 abdicate their responsibility to make specific choices about what students should learn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that there are some things that everybody ought to know,\u201d said Roosevelt Mont\u00e1s, senior lecturer in American studies and English at Columbia University. \u201cIt\u2019s an idea that academia has largely walked away from, but without, I think, a very good reason.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From 2008 to 2018, Mont\u00e1s directed the core curriculum at Columbia, founded in 1919, one of a few surviving programs that require all undergraduates to complete a sequence of interdisciplinary courses.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>A few other institutions also maintain ancient core curricula, programs formed in the pre-digital age. The University of Chicago requires undergraduates to complete an expansive core curriculum, choosing from a menu of customized courses. St. John\u2019s College, the famed \u201cgreat books\u201d school, teaches a four-year sequence of foundational texts at campuses in Annapolis, Md., and Santa Fe, N.M. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All of those institutions regularly review and revise their core programs to add diversity and depth.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve added Simone de Beauvoir. We\u2019ve added Baldwin. We\u2019ve added Toni Morrison. These are all lengthy debates,\u201d said Mark Roosevelt, president of St. John\u2019s in Santa Fe. \u201cIt\u2019s sort of like amending the U.S. Constitution. It should be hard.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But to create a new core curriculum from scratch?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be incredibly difficult to craft a core curriculum today, and I don\u2019t know anybody who\u2019s trying to do it,\u201d Roosevelt said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Generations ago, professors taught from a static list of Western scholars, most of them dead, white and male. Late in the 1800s, the advent of the modern research university inspired a movement away from <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> education to academic specialization and majors. After 1900, an influx of immigrants sparked a decades-long resurgence of \u201ccore\u201d programs that stressed Western intellectual thought.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u00a0In the civil rights years, critics assailed core courses for ignoring women, Black Americans and pretty much anything outside the white, European American tradition. Colleges abandoned core curricula en masse.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the modern era, students typically pass from a high school where most courses are prescribed to a college where they are free to study pretty much what they want.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Leaders of academia argue that their job is to teach students how to think, problem-solve and interact with the world, not to assign a list of essential books.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The great books that long populated core curricula have become so bound up with white, male, Euro-centric culture that the terms \u201cgreat books\u201d and \u201ccore curriculum\u201d themselves are falling from favor.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI try not to use the words \u2018great books,\u2019\u201d said Kyna Hamill, director of the core curriculum at Boston University.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>BU\u2019s core is optional, and the readings go well beyond Euro-American culture. Courses include The Way, a survey of Aristotle, Confucius, Laozi, Virgil, and texts from ancient India and Persia. The common <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theme<\/a>: \u201cthinking about the best way to live,\u201d Hamill said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The Columbia scholar Mont\u00e1s, who grew up in the Dominican Republic and Queens, argues against the idea that a \u201cgreat books\u201d course amounts to an indoctrination in Western values. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is nothing wrong, per se, with being a dead, white male,\u201d he said. \u201cThat is not a criterion for either inclusion or exclusion. And if we are going to have an education that takes the past seriously, that means that we are going to be studying a group of producers of intellectual content who are not representative of our current intellectual diversity.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the University of Chicago, students in one core-curriculum sequence transition from Homer\u2019s Odyssey to Harriet Jacobs\u2019s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. Another group reads The Pillow Book, a work of Japanese antiquity, alongside Saint Augustine\u2019s Confessions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a pretty big geographic range,\u201d said Eric Slauter, deputy dean of the university\u2019s humanities division. \u201cThere\u2019s a pretty big chronological range.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Champions of the core curriculum include the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, a nonprofit that advocates for colleges to take a more active role in deciding what courses students take.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The group <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whatwilltheylearn.com\/\">grades college<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whatwilltheylearn.com\/\">s on whether<\/a> they specifically require students to study science, math, economics, U.S. government or history, foreign language, literature and composition.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The University of Chicago and Columbia both earn Bs. St. John\u2019s gets an A. Amherst, Brown, Harvard, Hopkins and UCLA all receive Fs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA core curriculum is the most reasonable safety net that we have to ensure that students get a strong foundational education,\u201d said Michael Poliakoff, president of the trustees and alumni group. \u201cThere\u2019s something really wonderful, really magical, when faculty ask that question, What is really essential?, and act on it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Poliakoff\u2019s group leans conservative, rare in higher education, and was founded in part to balance academic liberalism. The schools awarded As in its grading scale amount to fewer than two dozen in all, include the U.S. Air Force and Military academies, the University of Georgia, a smattering of Christian colleges and the aforementioned St. John\u2019s.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The new push for a core curriculum in Florida is part of a larger campaign by a conservative governor to root out perceived liberal bias in the state\u2019s education systems.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Florida, we will build off of our higher education reforms by aligning core curriculum to the values of liberty and the Western tradition,\u201d DeSantis <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2023\/02\/01\/desantis-puts-action-his-plan-end-woke-activism\">sai<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2023\/02\/01\/desantis-puts-action-his-plan-end-woke-activism\">d during a press conference Tuesday<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Handouts from the governor\u2019s office gave sketchy details, but <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/31\/us\/governor-desantis-higher-education-chris-rufo.html\">both The New York Times<\/a> and the Chronicle of Higher Education reported that DeSantis intends to require courses in Western civilization in Florida\u2019s public universities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Academic leaders counter that no state government should impose lesson plans on a university.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think that the site of curricular decision is the state legislature,\u201d Mont\u00e1s said. \u201cI think the site is the faculty of the school.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Whatever comes of the Florida governor\u2019s initiative, the core curriculum may be seeing a modest resurgence.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Large-scale, mandatory core programs such as the ones at Columbia and the University of Chicago remain rare. But Mont\u00e1s says he has witnessed a \u201cmini-Renaissance\u201d in recent years around \u201cintroducing core texts, foundational texts, into the curriculum. It\u2019s not an explosion of that, but significant, steady growth.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A nonprofit Association for Core Texts and Courses <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coretexts.org\/programs\/college-great-books?v=f24485ae434a\">maintains a list of sever<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coretexts.org\/programs\/college-great-books?v=f24485ae434a\">al dozen colleges<\/a> with \u201cgreat books\u201d programs. Most are optional. A few require all students to crack a \u201ccore text\u201d at some point in their studies.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Stanford University recently <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/college.stanford.edu\/\">launched a new <\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/college.stanford.edu\/\">program<\/a> in Civic, Liberal and Global Education for all first-year students: a core curriculum in all but name.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/views\/2022\/03\/30\/stanford-first-year-curriculum-avoids-culture-wars-opinion\">In a recent op-<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/views\/2022\/03\/30\/stanford-first-year-curriculum-avoids-culture-wars-opinion\">ed<\/a>, headlined \u201cEnough With the Culture Wars,\u201d the program\u2019s director described the effort as nothing short of \u201can attempt to revive liberal education for the 21st century.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
