Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, on Wednesday penned a letter to Brian Boynton,\u00a0the principal deputy assistant attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> in the civil division, requesting that the Justice Department turn over documents that it provided in an earlier lawsuit filed by GOP-led states involving purported free speech violations.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The Hill obtained a copy of the letter, which requests that the materials are handed over by Feb. 22.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Committee on the Judiciary is conducting oversight of the Executive Branch\u2019s efforts to sidestep the First Amendment by coercing and coordinating with private companies, including social media platforms, to suppress free speech and censor content online,\u201d Jordan wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of our oversight, we write to request a discrete set of documents and information that the Department of Justice has produced as part of discovery in federal litigation over the same subject matter,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The attorneys general of Louisiana and Missouri <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/agjefflandry.com\/Article\/13032\">filed\u00a0a lawsuit<\/a> against President Biden and other administration officials in May for \u201callegedly working\u201d with social media companies \u2014 including Meta, Twitter and Youtube\u00a0\u2014 to censor and suppress free speech on topics such as COVID-19 and election integrity.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit\u00a0\u2014 brought by Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry (R) and then-Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt (R) \u2014\u00a0named Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, Heath and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, among others. It lists a number of stories the Republicans say were suppressed on social media, including the Hunter Biden laptop story and information about the origins of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Landry released a thread of emails from April 2021 between White House employees and Facebook discussing a video posted by Fox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>\u2019s Tucker Carlson that, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2FAGJeffLandry%2Fstatus%2F1612434911691948033%3Fs%3D20%26t%3DyBftwaxSqFH0ZMJ2_4LBfg&amp;data=05%7C01%7CRZilbermints%40TheHill.com%7C9ff27a8ad3af455ac47a08db09f76a80%7C9e5488e2e83844f6886cc7608242767e%7C0%7C0%7C638114730635226072%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=MPHhk4bj0%2ByUSGdmVhuodwtT1Qz3hhSNjWu4fb7JmPc%3D&amp;reserved=0\">according to Landry<\/a>, criticized the COVID-19 vaccine. In the communications, then-White House coronavirus response coordinator Andy Slavitt asked about Carlson\u2019s video, and White House director of digital strategy Rob Flaherty questioned why it did not violate the platform\u2019s regulations.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Landry zeroed in on an email from a Facebook representative, whose email address is redacted, that said, \u201cThe video received 50% demotion for seven days while in the queue to be fact checked, and will continue to be demoted even though it was not ultimately fact checked.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Jordan is now requesting that the Justice Department produce the documents it has provided in the Missouri and Louisiana litigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese documents <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear to reveal that the Executive Branch repeatedly pressured social media platforms to censor certain viewpoints,\u201d Jordan wrote.\u00a0\u201cCongress has an important interest in protecting and advancing fundamental free speech principles, including by examining how the Executive Branch coordinates with or coerces private actors to suppress First Amendment-protected speech.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cAs Congress continues to examine how to best protect Americans\u2019 fundamental freedoms, the documents discovered and produced during the Missouri v. Biden litigation are necessary to assist Congress in understanding the problem and evaluating potential legislative reforms,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The Hill reached out to the Justice Department for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan\u2019s letter is the latest example of increased scrutiny House Republicans are placing on the suppression of information on social media platforms. On Wednesday, the same day Jordan sent his letter, the House Oversight and Accountability Committee held a hearing that looked into Twitter\u2019s decisions regarding a 2020 New York Post story about Hunter Biden.
