Mike Lee (R-Utah) after the senator insisted he was not aware of any Republican in Congress who has tried to tie <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social<\/a> Security reforms to raising the debt ceiling, the latest swipe the administration has taken at the GOP on the issue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy protesting too much, Congressional Republicans keep proving the President\u2019s point about their long history of threatening Medicare and Social Security,\u201d deputy White House press secretary Andrew Bates said in a statement to The Hill.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cHalf of Sen. Lee\u2019s statement is an admission that he did indeed call for eliminating Social Security outright. But in terms of his claim that he\u2019s aware of \u2018no Republican \u2014 in either House of Congress \u2014 who has suggested any modification to Social Security as a condition for raising the debt ceiling,\u2019 we can help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bates pointed to several reports from the past few months about Republicans eyeing changes to Social Security and Medicare.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He noted an October\u00a0Fox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> piece\u00a0headlined \u201cRepublicans eye using debt limit hike to overhaul entitlement programs if entrusted with majority\u201d that quoted multiple House members.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed to a November Bloomberg report that said Sen. John Thune (S.D.), the No. 2 Senate Republican, indicated the party wanted to leverage the debt limit increase to secure cuts in federal spending and changes to entitlement programs.<\/p>\n<p>Bates cited a Jan. 6 Reuters\u00a0report\u00a0that \u201cseveral leading GOP House members are threatening to block an increase to force cuts to Medicare and Social Security spending.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the White House aide highlighted a Jan. 24\u00a0report\u00a0from The Washington Post headlined \u201cHouse GOP eyes Social Security, Medicare amid spending battle.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The White House has gone back and forth with Lee in the time since President Biden\u2019s State of the Union address on Tuesday, when the president drew jeers from the Utah senator and others when he argued some Republicans wanted to hold the debt ceiling hostage in order to sunset Social Security and Medicare.<\/p>\n<p>Biden on Wednesday\u00a0directly quoted\u00a0a 2010 video in which Lee said: \u201cI\u2019m here right now to tell you one thing you\u2019ve probably never heard from a politician. It\u2019ll be my objective to phase out Social Security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lee defended his stance in a lengthy statement issued Tuesday night, saying his comments at the time were meant to reflect how Congress should not have \u201csweeping power over people\u2019s livelihoods,\u201d but that existing commitments should be honored.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIn repeatedly quoting my 2010 remarks today, President Biden conveniently left out that critical details\u2014that even when I voiced that position, I insisted that we honor the reliance interests of those who have paid into the system,\u201d Lee said in a statement, adding that he has not proposed abolishing Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid during his time as a senator.<\/p>\n<p>Biden has embraced the back-and-forth with Republicans over Social Security and Medicare for months, viewing it as a winning issue for the White House and Democrats.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Leading up to the midterms last fall, Biden repeatedly tied the GOP to a proposal from Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) to sunset all federal legislation after five years to argue the party wanted to put Social Security and Medicare on the chopping block.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The president during his State of the Union address drew boos and jeers from some GOP lawmakers in attendance when he claimed they were threatening Social Security and Medicare, a move he vowed to veto. When Biden\u2019s call to protect those programs drew bipartisan <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lause, he suggested there was unanimous agreement on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo tonight, let\u2019s all agree \u2014 and we apparently are \u2014 let\u2019s stand up for seniors,\u201d Biden said Tuesday. \u201cStand up and show them we will not cut Social Security.
