Rick Scott (R-Fla.).<\/p>\n<p>Scott, who was unsuccessful in his run against McConnell for the top seat in the National Republican Senatorial Committee, proposed a plan in 2022 to sunset all federal legislation after five years, forcing Congress to reauthorize them.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, that was the Scott plan, that\u2019s not a Republican plan,\u201d McConnell told Terry Meiners on his self-titled podcast, noting that Republicans never planned to implement Scott\u2019s policy, even if they had won the majority in November.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it\u2019s clearly the Rick Scott plan, it is not the Republican plan,\u201d McConnell reiterated. \u201cAnd that\u2019s the view of the Speaker of the House as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McConnell said that because he and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy were in GOP leadership positions, they had more authority to \u201cstate what the position of the party is than any single senator.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Calling Scott\u2019s plan \u201ca bad idea,\u201d McConnell echoed McCarthy\u2019s promises that the programs wouldn\u2019t be touched, drawing attention instead to the Florida senator\u2019s upcoming election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it will be a challenge for him to deal with this in his own reelection in Florida,\u201d McConnell quipped, adding that it is \u201ca state with more elderly people than any other state in America.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The issue was brought back to light on Tuesday night when President Biden criticized the Republican Party for Scott\u2019s proposed plan in his annual State of the Union address.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Scott, in response, invited Biden on Thursday to debate the issue while the president was in his home state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince you can\u2019t stop talking about me and lying to Floridians about Social Security and Medicare, I\u2019m sure you\u2019ll accept my invitation to debate the issue,\u201d Scott <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ScottforFlorida\/status\/1623742872406134787\">wrote on Twitter<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ll be back in Florida tonight. You pick the time and place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>House Republicans also spoke out against the president\u2019s comments, including Rep.\u00a0Marjorie Taylor Greene\u00a0(R-Ga.), who could be heard\u00a0calling him a \u201cliar\u201d during the Tuesday night address.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not one that\u2019s into catcalls, but I understand the emotion that\u2019s involved in that when you hear the president of the United States saying something that he knows is simply not true,\u201d  Rep.\u00a0Mike Johnson (R-La.) said following Biden\u2019s speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no Republican that I know of, and certainly not one on Capitol Hill, who has ever suggested sunsetting Social Security and Medicare,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
