This follows a thorough investigation led by the National Crime Agency (NCA) and marks the UK\u2019s first-ever joint cyber crime sanctions.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-cracks-down-on-ransomware-actors\">According to the British government<\/a>, ransomware is a \u201ctier one national security threat\u201d that\u2019s increasingly used to attack businesses and public sector organisations.<\/p>\n<p>Ransomware groups known as Conti, Wizard Spider, UNC1878, Gold Blackburn, Trickman, and Trickbot have been responsible for the deployment of ransomware strains including Conti, Ryuk, and Trickbot.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\">\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Discover_the_future_of_tech\"><\/span>Discover the future of tech!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Join us at TNW Conference June 15 &amp; 16 in Amsterdam<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The groups target organisations they expect would pay the most and time their attacks to cause the maximum damage. Conti and Ryuk alone have affected 149 UK individuals and businesses, extracting at least an estimated \u00a327 million.<\/p>\n<p>Conti\u2019s recent victims in the UK include the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, food distribution firm Reed Boardall, Cleveland Council, and forensic laboratory Eurofins.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"c-richText__pullQuote\">\n<div class=\"c-richText__pullQuoteGradient\">\n<p class=\"c-richText__pullQuoteQuote\">\u201cThese criminals and those that support them are not immune to UK action.\n            <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nConti was also one of the first cyber crime groups to declare support to Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine, while the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has assessed that key members of the group are \u201chighly likely\u201d to \u201cmaintain links\u201d with the Russian Intelligence services.<br \/>\nAnd although the group was disbanded in May 2022, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-cracks-down-on-ransomware-actors\">government reporting<\/a> suggests that members continue to be involved in threatening UK security with new ransomware strains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sanctions are the first of their kind for the UK and signal the continuing campaign targeting those responsible for some of the most sophisticated and damaging ransomware that has impacted the UK and our allies,\u201d Graeme Biggar, NCA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Director, said in a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalcrimeagency.gov.uk\/news\/ransomware-criminals-sanctioned-in-joint-uk-us-crackdown-on-international-cyber-crime\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States and the United Kingdom are taking coordinated action targeting cyber criminals who launched assaults against our critical infrastructure,\u201d Antony J. In addition, making funds available to them, such as paying ransomware \u2014 including crypto assets \u2014 has been strictly prohibited.<\/p>\n<p>The US Treasury Department <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/jy1256\">warned<\/a> that \u201cany foreign financial institution that knowingly facilitates a significant transaction, or provides significant financial services for any of the individuals or entities designated today could be subject to US correspondent or payable-through account sanctions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through their collaboration, the UK and US authorities said they will continue to expose cyber criminals associated with the ransomware groups and crack down on their activities, aiming to reinforce their cyber security.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
