It was not the original name of the company.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon is one of the largest and most successful companies in history. It\u2019s so ubiquitous that you probably don\u2019t think of the rainforest that bears the same name. But how did Jeff Bezos come up with it?<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Was_Amazons_First_Name\"><\/span>What Was Amazon\u2019s First Name?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to imagine Amazon not being called \u201cAmazon,\u201d but that wasn\u2019t the first name chosen by CEO Jeff Bezos. After moving to Seattle, Washington in 1994, Bezos incorporated the company with the name \u201cCadabra, Inc.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Brad Stone\u2019s book \u201c<em>The Everything Store<\/em>,\u201d \u201cCadabra\u201d was a reference to \u201cabracadabra,\u201d to suggest using the store would work like magic. The Cadabra name didn\u2019t stick around for long, though.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few months later, after a lawyer misheard the name as \u201ccadaver,\u201d Bezos decided to find a new name. At first, Bezos and his wife wanted <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/relentless.com\">relentless.com<\/a>, but it sounded too unfriendly. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=e7eab128eb8d1c53e14db14f4c632447&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fawake.com&amp;cuid=xid:{xid}&amp;___trxnet=vg\">Awake.com<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/browse.com\">browse.com<\/a> were also in consideration\u2014all three still redirect to Amazon.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Did_Jeff_Bezos_Call_His_Company_Amazon\"><\/span>Why Did Jeff Bezos Call His Company Amazon?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In the time before Google Search ruled the internet, being at the top of alphabetical lists still mattered. That\u2019s what led Bezos to awake.com and another name, \u201cAard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, Bezos settled on the name we all know\u2014Amazon.com. As the story goes, he was looking through the dictionary and liked \u201camazon\u201d because it sounded \u201cexotic and different.\u201d Amazon is not only the name of a rainforest, but also the largest river in the world. Bezos said he planned to make Amazon the biggest bookstore in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Bezos felt that branding was incredibly important for his company, especially as an online company. The rest is history, and now millions of people buy everything from tech products to household items from a website. The original purpose of the company\u2014books\u2014is still a massive arm, but Amazon does so much more nowadays.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>Did Amazon\u2019s name play into its success? It\u2019s hard to know for sure, but a good name certainly doesn\u2019t hurt.
