\n A US Coast Guard cutter crew\u2019s refreshing dip in the Pacific turned into a \u201cJaws\u201d-worthy adventure complete with a giant inflatable unicorn \u2013 but at least they didn\u2019t need a bigger boat.<\/p>\n

After completing their operations \u201ca zillion miles from land\u201d on Wednesday, the 40 men and women aboard the 416-foot-long USCGC Kimball decided to jump into the ocean for a much-needed break, according to the vessel\u2019s Facebook<\/a> page.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had not been off the ship for weeks, were at that point where every day feels like \u2018Groundhog Day,\u2019 and were looking for something to break up the monotony,\u201d the Coasties\u2019 account said. \u201cAnswer: Swim Call!\u201d<\/p>\n

With a rescue swimmer, an armed shark watch and a \u201cfully vested and tested plan\u201d in place to ensure safety, they jumped in the water with swim fins and other paraphernalia \u2014 including the inflatable unicorn, the second incident in recent days involving the legendary creature during a sea rescue.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything was by the numbers. Everyone was having a great day. Everyone was smiling and having fun. It was perfect!\u201d the riveting account continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then\u2026 Bridge personnel reported \u2018Shark!\u2019 over the radio,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs if right out of a Hollywood movie, a 6-8 foot shark (no exaggeration) surfaced at the Rescue Door and was swimming toward 30-40 people in the water about 30 feet away,\u201d the post read.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone on the Flight Deck had a bird\u2019s eye view. A review of video shot by a crew member reveals it was likely a Long-Fin Mako or Pelagic Thresher Shark \u2013 not something to mess with!\u201d<\/p>\n

Maritime Enforcement Specialist 1st Class Samuel Cintron, the eagle-eyed shark watch, quickly locked on target under the orders of his animal-loving chief who yelled, \u201cShoot it!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile some crew went for the Jacob\u2019s ladder on the Fantail, others went for the open stern notch at the ship\u2019s stern, and a large group swam for the small boat,\u201d according to the Facebook narrative.<\/p>\n

\u201cME1 Cintron fired a well-aimed burst right at\/on top of the shark to protect shipmates just feet away. It turned away for a few seconds then turned back.\u201d<\/p>\n

So Cintron opened fire again.<\/p>\n

\u201cME1 fired bursts as needed to keep the shark from his shipmates with amazing accuracy. The shark would wave off with each burst but kept coming back toward our shipmates,\u201d according to the post.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t the panic of the 4th of July scene from JAWS, but once everyone realized what was happ<\/a>ening, they moved with a purpose! Everyone stayed focused and worked the problem,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll hands are safe and accounted for. We even saved the inflatable unicorn!\u201d the post said.<\/p>\n

The only injury was a scraped knee suffered by one crew member.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut where was it located you ask? On his knee\u2026.in the center of a tattoo. What tattoo you ask? An open set of shark\u2019s teeth. Seriously, you can\u2019t make this up!\u201d<\/p>\n

After the predatory scare, the relieved crew decided to blow off some steam by watching a couple of appropriate movies<\/a> \u2013 \u201cJaws\u201d and \u201cSharknado,\u201d of course.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor those asking about the shark, we don\u2019t think the shark was injured. Our goal was to keep it away from shipmates, not harm it if possible,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt later joined a few smaller buddies that showed up and they swam off together.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
