<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       This year\u2019s Super Bowl halftime show star, Rihanna, hasn\u2019t released a new album since 2016, but she\u2019s been plenty busy putting some of her estimated $1.4 billion fortune to good use.<\/p>\n<p> While fans have been waiting for new music, Rihanna has been building a reputation as a groundbreaking philanthropist with her Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF). Named for her grandparents, Clara and Lionel Braithwaite, Rihanna launched the foundation in 2012.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Its early work focused on projects in Barbados, with its first grant ($452,000) going to help a hospital there advance clinical care for cancer patients. Rihanna, whose full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, lost her grandmother to cancer in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Since then CLF\u2019s scope has broadened from personal to global, funding work in all 50 U.S. states and seven Caribbean countries. CLF has now \u201cleveraged\u201d $100 million in grants (meaning that some of the money has come from outside donors and was distributed by CLF, a spokeswoman said). <\/p>\n<p>In the process, Rihanna\u2019s foundation has distinguished itself with \u201ctrailblazing\u201d work seeking <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> change through a multi-racial, community-led lens, said Tyeshia Wilson, an expert on Black philanthropy with the nonprofit Philanthropy Together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer philanthropic efforts need to be celebrated and honored on the main stage just as much as her music,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cShe is making a significant impact in that she is changing the face and the narrative of philanthropy, especially as it relates to Black women\u2019s philanthropy, or just Black philanthropy in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Clara Lionel Foundation now focuses on three priorities: climate resilience (helping communities prepare for and withstand natural disasters); climate justice (mitigating climate impacts in communities of color and island nations); and \u201clegacy projects\u201d supporting causes in Rihanna\u2019s native Barbados. Rihanna herself is \u201cdeeply passionate about the work we do and is very involved,\u201d CLF executive director Justine Lucas said. \u201cShe <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roves all grants and donations that go out the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CLF is at the forefront of philanthropy because of its \u201ctrust-based\u201d approach to giving, Wilson said. That\u2019s a giving style that challenges traditional power structures in philanthropy. Instead of wealthy donors calling the shots about how their money should be used, trust-based philanthropy attempts to give power back to the people who are closer to the problem that the donor is trying to solve.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CLF also takes an intersectional approach in its work, recognizing that many overlapping factors create inequities, Wilson said. \u201cOften,<em> who<\/em> we support is just as important to us as <em>how<\/em> we provide support,\u201d Lucas said. CLF is \u201cproud that 95% of our partners are entities focused on and led by women, youth, Black, Indigenous, People of Color and LGBTQIA+ communities,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n<p>One example of CLF\u2019s intersectional approach: it is investing in efforts to make reproductive and sexual health clinics in the Caribbean climate resilient, so their services aren\u2019t interrupted by natural disasters.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>Wilson also lauded the foundation\u2019s collaboration with other funders. CLF combines resources with other funders, then hands the decision-making about how the money will be spent to grassroots groups, Wilson said. CLF\u2019s funding partners have included Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, whose philanthropic entity, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/u\/1\/d\/1-eGxq2mMoEGwgSpNVL5j2sa6ToojZUZ-Zun8h2oBAR4\/htmlview\" class=\"icon none\">Start Small LLC<\/a>, donated $18 million directly to CLF in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>CLF has also partnered with billionaire George Soros\u2019 Open Societies Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation on climate resilience funding. Last month, CLF joined prominent philanthropists including the Ford Foundation and Melinda French Gates\u2019 Pivotal Ventures to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/business-philanthropy-7c545feeca154541f61118e4e45a85b2\" class=\"icon none\">sign an open letter<\/a> calling for more funding of Black feminist organizations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rihanna\u2019s fans can participate in her charitable work, too, by donating their own money to the Clara Lionel Foundation on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/withstand.claralionelfoundation.org\/\" class=\"icon none\">its website<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fentybeauty.com\/products\/donate-to-the-clara-lionel-foundation\" class=\"icon none\">when shopping<\/a> on Fenty Beauty. \u201cWe know we can\u2019t do this work alone so we are grateful for every dollar contributed to our work,\u201d Lucas told MarketWatch. \u201cRihanna\u2019s fans, the \u2018Navy,\u2019 are wonderful, passionate and loyal, and we are very appreciative of their support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rihanna made history when she became the first Black woman to create a fashion line with the global luxury brand LVMH<br \/>\n        LVMUY,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/201256382\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-1.13%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       and her philanthropic work has broken barriers too, Wilson said. Though the fashion brand with LVMH ended in 2020, Rihanna\u2019s 50% stake in the successful makeup line Fenty Beauty (LVMH owns the other 50%) made her a billionaire in 2021, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/maddieberg\/2021\/08\/04\/fentys-fortune-rihanna-is-now-officially-a-billionaire\/?sh=50acc8287c96\" class=\"icon none\">Forbes reported<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Few people, of course, have that kind of wealth, but Wilson sees Rihanna\u2019s philanthropy as a model that can inspire anyone because of its emphasis on collaboration. Philanthropy Together, where Wilson is director of engagement, teaches people how to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/philanthropytogether.org\/programs-resources\/start-a-giving-circle-launchpad\/\" class=\"icon none\">start giving circles<\/a>, a method of charitable giving where a group of people pool their money to maximize their impact. It\u2019s a strategy rooted in the West African and Caribbean concept of \u201cubuntu,\u201d or collective giving, Wilson noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Philanthropy Together we really seek to change the narrative of who is considered to be a philanthropist; Rihanna is doing just that,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cShe is breaking barriers and opening doors.
