(AP Photo\/Patrick Semansky)<\/p>\n<p>Biden enjoyed the limelight during this week\u2019s State of the Union address, particularly after he called out Republicans\u00a0over previous proposals to sunset or reform eligibility requirements for Social Security and Medicare programs. In the backdrop of Biden\u2019s speech is the ongoing fight over the nation\u2019s debt limit and Republicans\u2019 insistence on spending cuts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome Republicans want Social Security and Medicare to sunset,\u201d Biden said, before he was interrupted by jeers, including from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) who called him a \u201cliar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the Republicans that Biden was alluding to was Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), who released a multi-point plan last year proposing that\u00a0\u201call federal legislation sunsets in 5 years\u201d and that \u201cif a law is worth keeping, Congress can pass it again\u201d \u2014 legislation that would impact both programs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Scott\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2FSenRickScott%2Fstatus%2F1623298302803337216&amp;data=05%7C01%7CMSimon%40TheHill.com%7C29b803acd1bd4f57113808db0baaed79%7C9e5488e2e83844f6886cc7608242767e%7C0%7C0%7C638116600976192246%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=oBD6v6B3EcCZSHQc2r8il09a18Sc7cieI7XCK6x3OjU%3D&amp;reserved=0\">defended his position in a statement<\/a>\u00a0following Biden\u2019s address, saying \u201cthis is clearly and obviously an idea aimed at dealing with all the crazy new laws our Congress has been passing of late\u201d and suggested that \u201cto suggest that this means I want to cut Social Security or Medicare is a lie, &amp; is a dishonest move.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president ran with that messaging\u00a0during a visit on Wednesday to the battleground state of Wisconsin, where he spoke to residents about the merits of his economic plan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of Republicans, their dream is to cut Social Security and Medicare,\u201d Biden said in the Badger State. \u201cWell, let me just say this. (AP Photo\/Marta Lavandier, File)<\/p>\n<p>Prospective 2024 Republican hopefuls are also addressing the issue of education, including targeting educational curriculum and parents\u2019 rights to decisions made by schools.<\/p>\n<p>That was most recently on display last month when\u00a0Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis\u2019s (R) administration rejected an Advanced Placement course\u00a0on African American studies. The Florida Department of Education argued that \u201cthe content of this course is inexplicably contrary to Florida law and significantly lacks educational value,\u201d and the College Board later revised some of the material included in the course.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R), who has been floated as a possible 2024 presidential contender, made the issue of education a key component of his platform, including rallying against critical race theory (CRT) and for deeper parental engagement in school curriculum.\u00a0Critical race theory, which DeSantis and other conservatives have also attacked, is an academic framework taught at the graduate level that argues that racism is systemic in U.S. institutions and government. It has become a catch-all buzzword for any teaching about race in schools, however.<\/p>\n<p>During the midterms, other Republican candidates like Nevada Gov. (Annabelle Gordon)<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Democrats widely credit the issue of abortion as a major reason they performed better than expected during November\u2019s midterm elections, gaining a real majority in the Senate and losing the House by a narrow margin.<\/p>\n<p>Even in key races this year, Democrats are seeking to put the issue of abortion front and center once again, including in the race for the open seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, which could determine the high court\u2019s partisan tilt.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The state Supreme Court is likely to hear about Wisconsin\u2019s contested 1849 abortion law, which offers no exceptions for patients except when the life of the mother is at risk. Pat Ryder\u00a0told reporters this week\u00a0was \u201cpart of a larger Chinese surveillance balloon program [\u2026] that\u2019s been operated for several years,\u201d drew angry remarks from Democrats and Republicans alike about the country\u2019s delayed response to shoot it down.<\/p>\n<p>Some Republicans in particular, such as Greene, latched onto the issue. (Greg Nash)<\/p>\n<p>Although immigration and the southern border are not necessarily new issues Republicans have pursued on the campaign trail, it doesn\u2019t mean the issue won\u2019t feature prominently in different campaigns and on the debate stage.<\/p>\n<p>The first hearing that the House Judiciary Committee, which is chaired by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio),\u00a0launched this year\u00a0was titled \u201cThe Biden Border Crisis \u2014 Part One.\u201d The hearing came as the U.S. reported over 250,000 encounters on the southern border in December, per data from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection\u00a0\u2014 the highest number of encounters at the southern border that the Biden administration has contended with since the president took office.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Title 42, a policy first introduced in 2020 by the Trump administration and continued under the Biden administration, has also dogged Biden officials. The policy allows border officials to quickly expel migrants seeking asylum. (AP Photo\/Jose Luis Magana, File)<\/p>\n<p>Republicans also have not been shy in using legislation to target gender-affirming care, transgender girls and women competing in high school and college sports, and the classification of drag shows.<\/p>\n<p>Florida\u00a0made headlines last March\u00a0when DeSantis signed what opponents have dubbed as \u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay\u201d legislation into law, which bars gender identity and sexual orientation topics in classroom instruction by primary school teachers. Subjects that aren\u2019t \u201cage <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ropriate or developmentally appropriate\u201d cannot be taught by educators regardless of grade level.<\/p>\n<p>And South Dakota Gov. Others say that it helped key races stay competitive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be honest with you, yes, Dr. [Mehmet] Oz lost that race in Pennsylvania, but where he started at and where he ended [was] a much closer race than it was over the summer.
