“#Steven Soderbergh Re-Editing Three of His Films, Including \u2018Kafka\u2019<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Steven Soderbergh<\/strong> loves to keep busy. Even when he \u201cretired,\u201d he still managed to direct two full seasons of television (The Knick<\/em>). So in true Soderbergh form, he\u2019s been occupied with work during the pandemic. According to the filmmaker himself, he\u2019s spent these last few months re-editing three of his films. Two of the re-edits \u2013 for\u00a0Schizopolis<\/em><\/strong> and Full Frontal<\/em> <\/strong>\u2013 are minor. But Soderbergh has also radically altered\u00a0Kafka<\/em><\/strong>, his excellent second feature film that remains unavailable on DVD, Blu-ray, or streaming. Fingers crossed this means he\u2019ll be releasing it into the world soon.<\/p>\n

If you want to feel lazy, just take a look at Steven Soderbergh. The man is always working, even during quarantine time. Speaking with IndieWire, Soderbergh revealed that he\u2019s re-edited three of his films \u2013\u00a0Schizopolis<\/em>,\u00a0Full Frontal<\/em>, and\u00a0Kafka<\/em>. The changes to\u00a0Schizopolis<\/em>,\u00a0an experimental comedy released in 1996, and\u00a0Full Frontal<\/em>, a 2002 flick about various characters in Hollywood, are minimal. \u201cThey\u2019re just shorter,\u201d Soderbergh says.<\/p>\n

But the same can\u2019t be said about\u00a0Kafka<\/em>. According to the filmmaker, this re-edit is \u201cpretty radically different, something else entirely.\u201d This isn\u2019t the first time the director has mentioned his\u00a0Kafka<\/em> re-edit. He actually revealed he was tinkering with the film in 2013, telling Vulture:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m overhauling\u00a0Kafka<\/i>\u00a0completely. It\u2019s funny\u2014wrapp<\/a>ing a movie 22 years later! But the rights had reverted back to me and Paul Rassam, an executive producer, and he said, \u2018I know you were never really happy with it. Do you want to go back in and play around?\u2019 We shot some inserts while we were doing\u00a0Side Effects.<\/i>\u00a0I\u2019m also dubbing the whole thing into German so the accent issue goes away. And Lem [Dobbs] and I have been working on recalibrating some of the dialogue and the storytelling. So it\u2019s a completely different movie. The idea is to put them both out on disc.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Then, during a Reddit<\/a> AMA in 2017, Soderbergh said: \u201cI\u2019m in the midst (if you can call fifteen years of work \u201cmidst\u201d) of a radical KAFKA overhaul, which I really want to finish by the end of the year.\u201d Of course, since he\u2019s still working on it here in the year 2020, it\u2019s clear he didn\u2019t finish it by the end of 2017.<\/p>\n

Released in 1991,\u00a0Kafka<\/em> was Soderbergh\u2019s second film, following his acclaimed debut Sex, Lies, and Videotape<\/em>. It received mixed reviews and was a financial disappointment, and it\u2019s also one of the harder-to-find films. It was released on VHS and LaserDisc (remember those things?), but has yet to find its way to DVD or Blu-ray (although there have been rumors of a Criterion release for years). It\u2019s a weird little film that reimagines the life of\u00a0Franz Kafka (as played by Jeremy Irons<\/strong>) as if the writer were living in one (or several) of his stories. I\u2019ve always been a fan of the film, but I\u2019d love to see this drastically different version Soderbergh has been cooking up for the last few years. Hopefully, we\u2019ll hear more soon.<\/p>\n
