There are a couple of ways to play YouTube in the background on your iPhone and Android phone. If you only plan to listen to music, consider getting a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/musicpremium\">YouTube Music Premium<\/a> subscription ($9.99\/month). If you plan to listen to videos as well as music, then you\u2019d be better off with a YouTube Premium subscription ($11.99\/month), which covers YouTube Music Premium\u00a0as well.<\/p>\n<p>With a Premium subscription, you get benefits like the ability to play your content in the background, have an ad-free experience, and download content for offline playback. It\u2019s worth getting a subscription if you consume a reasonable amount of YouTube content.<\/p>\n<p>In case you rarely want to listen to YouTube in the background, then you can use a web browser-based workaround to do that, as we\u2019ll explain below. It\u2019s a little bit clunky as you\u2019ll see, but it works on both iPhone and Android and lets you play your favorite YouTube videos even when your phone\u2019s screen is turned off.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Listen_to_YouTube_With_Your_iPhones_Screen_Off\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_1\">Listen to YouTube With Your iPhone\u2019s Screen Off<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>On iPhone, in our testing, we found that you can play YouTube videos in the background without Premium only using the Google Chrome browser. The method doesn\u2019t work in Apple Safari and Mozilla Firefox.<\/p>\n<p>So, if you haven\u2019t already, launch App Store on your iPhone and download and install the free\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/app\/google-chrome\/id535886823?at=1010l392g&amp;ct=htg857115\">Chrome<\/a> browser. Then, launch the browser, open <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/\">YouTube.com<\/a>, and play the video you\u2019d like to listen to when you turn off your phone\u2019s screen.<\/p>\n<p>When the video begins to play, get back to your iPhone\u2019s home screen. At this point, you\u2019ll realize that your video has stopped playing, but fret not.<\/p>\n<p>To force your video\u2019s audio to continue, open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner of your phone\u2019s screen. In Control Center, from the media playback section, select the Play icon.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-857143\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/1-resume-youtube-playback-iphone.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"563\" height=\"499\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You can now listen to your video\u2019s audio part, and it\u2019ll continue to play even if you turn your screen off. Unfortunately, we couldn\u2019t get this to work in Microsoft Edge.<\/p>\n<p>To begin, launch <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=e7eab128eb8d1c53e14db14f4c632447&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fplay.google.com%2Fstore%2Fapps%2Fdetails%3Fid%3Dcom.android.chrome&amp;cuid=xid:{xid}&amp;___trxnet=vg\">Chrome<\/a> or <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=e7eab128eb8d1c53e14db14f4c632447&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fplay.google.com%2Fstore%2Fapps%2Fdetails%3Fid%3Dorg.mozilla.firefox&amp;cuid=xid:{xid}&amp;___trxnet=vg\">Firefox<\/a> on your phone and visit\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/\">YouTube.com<\/a>. Then, play the video you want to listen to. When your video plays, get back to your home screen. Your video will stop playing, but there\u2019s nothing to worry about.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, pull down from the top of your phone\u2019s screen.
