airspace.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The remarkable development came roughly one week after the U.S. shot down a Chinese surveillance balloon off the coast of South Carolina days after it was first reported to be hovering over the continental United States.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>President Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Saturday authorized the mission, and Biden ordered the U.S. military to send an F-22 fighter jet to take the object down in Canadian territory.<\/p>\n<p>While U.S. officials have disclosed some information about the latest objects taken out of the sky, there are still major gaps in what even the government has learned about them and communicated publicly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here is what is known about the objects shot down over the weekend, and what is still unknown.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Known\"><\/span><strong>Known<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span object off of the northern coast of Alaska on Friday afternoon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The \u201chigh-altitude object\u201d was over Alaska at 40,000 feet and it was shot down at Biden\u2019s direction on Friday afternoon, national security spokesman John Kirby confirmed at a press briefing that day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The object, which was described as much smaller than the Chinese spy balloon, landed in U.S. waters after a F-22 fired an AIM-9X Sidewinder missile to take it down. Officials have not said where the object originated from.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Saturday_over_Canada\"><\/span><strong><em>Saturday over Canada<\/em><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The military on Saturday then shot down an unidentified, cylindrical object over frozen territory in northern Canada.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trudeau on Saturday authorized the mission and Biden ordered the U.S. military to send a F-22 fighter jet to take the object down in Canadian territory.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I ordered the take down of an unidentified object that violated Canadian airspace. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NORADCommand?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@NORADCommand<\/a> shot down the object over the Yukon. The airspace has since been reopened.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Unknown\"><\/span><strong>Unknown<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_are_these_coming_from_and_who_is_responsible\"><\/span><strong><em>Where are these coming from and who is responsible?\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1400\" height=\"787\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/c9b9e6c889ae495ba2eafbcb988feb60-e1675901749536.jpg?w=900\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3849515\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/c9b9e6c889ae495ba2eafbcb988feb60-e1675901749536.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/c9b9e6c889ae495ba2eafbcb988feb60-e1675901749536.jpg?resize=876,492 876w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 899px) 100vw, 876px\"><\/figure>\n<p>Some of the most basic information about the objects shot down over the weekend is still unknown, including who was operating them and what their purpose was.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the issue is that officials have not been able to recover the debris yet from the objects shot down in recent days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are going to continue to share as much information with the American people as we learn more about these objects,\u201d Kirby said on MSNBC\u2019s \u201cMorning Joe\u201d on Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe truth is that we haven\u2019t been able to gain access to the three that were shot down Friday, Saturday and yesterday, in large part because of the weather conditions, and the third one yesterday was shot down over Lake Huron, so it\u2019s underwater.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Glen VanHerck, the commander of the Pentagon\u2019s Northern Command, made waves on Sunday when he was asked if officials had ruled out the possibility that the objects were connected to extraterrestrials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll let the intel community and the counterintelligence community figure that out. Mike Turner (R-Ohio), the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said that there is an inherent threat considering there are multiple objects being shot down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I think this shows, which is probably more important to our policy discussion here, is that we really have to declare that we\u2019re going to defend our airspace.
