However, the message is a phishing scam made to look real using the official Namecheap.com domain.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-145603 size-full\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/p\/uploads\/2023\/02\/4547a0d3.jpg\" alt=\"A phishing scam email sent with a Namecheap.com domain in the sender fields.\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" data-credittext=\"Danny Chadwick \/ Review Geek\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Danny Chadwick \/ Review Geek<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Discerning users spotted the phishing email and reached out to Namecheap CEO Richard Kirkendall via <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>. The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NamecheapCEO\/status\/1624887703715082245?s=20&amp;t=xUl_jjJFvdS1R90Uodai3Q\">company chief replied<\/a> that the company was looking into the issue and shared a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cybernews.com\/security\/mailchimp-mailgun-and-sendgrid-api-leak\/\"><em>Cybernews<\/em> story<\/a> that reported an API leak involving third-party email clients MailChimp, Mailgun, and Sendgrid, alluding that this incident may be connected to the phishing scheme.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Namecheap?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Namecheap<\/a> could you please check if any of your mailing server hasn&#8217;t been compromised.<br \/>I have received couple of unsolicited email. Security details shows that it was signed by one of your servers. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/38epPYjS42\">pic.twitter.com\/38epPYjS42<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ruby (@rubie_shell) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rubie_shell\/status\/1624886535920181254?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 12, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>About two and a half hours later, the same customers received an update email from Namecheap, informing them that an \u201cupstream (third party) system\u201d was used to send emails in the company\u2019s name and that further emails would be suspended until the problem was resolved. The company stressed that hackers did not breach its system and that personal information, products, and accounts were safe.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe would like to assure you that Namecheap\u2019s own systems were not breached and your products, accounts and personal information remain secure.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Phishing scams that use official-looking domain names in their email from and reply fields are particularly pernicious because one of the first ways to detect a phishing message is to check which email domain a suspicious message came from. When customers see the official website of a company they patronize and trust, they\u2019re far more likely to follow a link and give their personal information to hackers. Namecheap requested that customers ignore the phishing emails and advised them not to click on any links contained in the fraudulent messages.<\/p>\n<p>In the early evening, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Namecheap\/status\/1624926229475237888?s=20&amp;t=rG_uMi06Mk0xfdhQN6kaig\">Namecheap informed customers<\/a> that the issue that caused the phishing messages to be sent was fixed and that standard mail service would resume.
