good food.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it\u2019s not all paella and chill. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Val\u00e8ncian region\u2019s startup scene \u2014 based mainly in its capital plus the smaller cities of Alicante and Castellon \u2014 has been revving up in recent years, and is now making its mark in everything from AI, fintech, and cybersecurity, to cleantech, healthtech, and industrial IoT.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3YGpMem\">TNW\u2019s first conference in Val\u00e8ncia<\/a> just <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">around the corner<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we rounded up a bunch of leading lights on the local tech scene who have helped to grow the ecosystem over the past decade. Our aim was to get their take on where Val\u00e8ncia\u2019s tech scene is at today, what it\u2019s got going for it, and the challenges ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\">\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Get_your_tickets_for_TNW_Valencia_in_March\"><\/span>Get your tickets for TNW Val\u00e8ncia in March!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The heart of tech is coming to the heart of the Mediterranean<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI always say that we are in adolescence,\u201d <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/es.linkedin.com\/in\/javiermegiasterol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Javier Megias<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, managing partner of the EMEA VC fund of <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plugandplaytechcenter.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plug and Play Tech Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Val\u00e8ncia, told TNW. \u201cThis is a really important moment, where you create your beliefs and the foundations of your life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the next few years everything is going to speed up quite a bit. We are at the tipping point of the change in the ecosystem, going from a regional, quite local ecosystem to something much more ambitious \u2014 and much faster.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Valencia_by_the_numbers\"><\/span>Val\u00e8ncia by the numbers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data shows a tech hub on the up-and-up. According to the Bankinter Foundation\u2019s Startups Observatory, investment in Val\u00e8ncia-based startups grew from \u20ac58.5m in 2021 to \u20ac73m in 2022. Other noteworthy success stories include Jeff, Climate Trade, Voicemod, Sesame HR, and Sales Layer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The investor scene skews towards local offices, with notable names including Draper B1, Angels Capital, private angel investor network BiGBAN, Demium, and GoHub Ventures, as well as Global Omnium, the world\u2019s fourth-largest water utility. Almost 30% of all the startups there are pre-seed, and another 30% are seed stage. Just under 10% of them have received Series A funding. Fewer than 1% have secured Series B financing, and the same goes for Series C.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"c-richText__pullQuote\">\n<div class=\"c-richText__pullQuoteGradient\">\n<p class=\"c-richText__pullQuoteQuote\">\u201cVal\u00e8ncia\u2019s international community is growing.\n            <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Megias says Val\u00e8ncia is becoming a magnet for expats. The reasonable cost of living and the pleasant, manageable city are big attractions, but there are also more international jobs becoming available. Megias\u2019 team, which looks after the EMEA region from central Valencia, is made up of 30 different nationalities, all of whom speak English at work.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s an international community that\u2019s growing because of big companies, like Plug and Play, coming here and attracting them,\u201d said Megias, a\u00a0cofounder of <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/startupvalencia.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Startup Valencia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a non-profit that promotes local startups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the key areas for startups in the region is La Marina, which also h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ens to be the venue for <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3YGpMem\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TNW Valencia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The accelerator <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/lanzadera.es\/\">Lanzadera<\/a>, TNW\u2019s strategic partner, pioneered the development of a tech s<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> on the seafront.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Founded in 2013 by Joan Roig, the billionaire owner of the Mercadona supermarket chain, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complex<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is now home to the EMEA business school, Lanzadera itself and its scaleup space Angels, the Insomnia accelerator, Biohub, and Sesame. Lanzadera, which works under the umbrella of the Marina de Empresas entrepreneurial hub, has accelerated over 1,000 startups so far, and recently took in its first batch of over 100 from Portugal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, another building on the tech strip will open its doors: La Terminal startup hub. When investors come, they often get <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0a tour of all the accelerators and incubators along the Marina.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attracting large-scale investment, however, remains a challenge. \u201cAs of today, if you are thinking of Val\u00e8ncia, you are not coming here to get investment, you are coming here because you find it a good place to start with low rates [for renting office space],\u201d said Vic\u00e9n.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are very good at entrepreneurs bringing new ideas to life but when it comes to investment, there is a gap. As is the case in many European ecosystems, the second generation of founders and employees, who stay and either invest or found new startups, will be essential to the maturation of Val\u00e8ncia\u2019s tech sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOnce we have those second-time\u00a0founders that already have the connections, everything is going to be much, much faster,\u201d said Megias.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From an outside observer\u2019s view, one thing that needs to change is establishing English as a company language in scaleups, which would open up opportunities for international talent and investors. Zeleros, the Plug and Play Tech Center, and a few other organisations already do this.
