But one thing many of us don\u2019t know for sure is how often we need to be cleaning our pet\u2019s food and water bowls (and it\u2019s more often than you may think).<\/p>\n<p>Did you know your pet\u2019s food bowls should be cleaned with soap and water after every meal?<\/p>\n<p>Veterinarian Katie Malensek told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=432db143fab4826620fe7b8eb31c6901&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fbe.chewy.com%2Fclean-dog-bowls-right-way%2F&amp;cuid=xid:{xid}&amp;___trxnet=vg\">Chewy<\/a> that washing them after every use is ideal because dried food particles and saliva contain bacteria that can multiply without proper cleansing. Just as we would clean our own plates after eating, Malensek said, we should do the same for our pets.<\/p>\n<p>As for water bowls, those should be cleaned <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=432db143fab4826620fe7b8eb31c6901&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.popsugar.com%2Fpets%2Fhow-often-to-wash-your-dog-or-cat-bowls-48165250&amp;cuid=xid:{xid}&amp;___trxnet=vg\">once a day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"product-box  \">\n<div class=\"product-img product-img-noaward\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/m.media-amazon.com\/images\/I\/419JYgZKrgL._SL160_.jpg\" height=\"147px\" width=\"147px\" alt=\"\" role=\"presentation\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Commonly found in our pet\u2019s food and water bowls are Salmonella, E. coli, algae, and mold\u2014which are harmful to everyone in the home, not just our pets.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.org\/blog\/consumer\/clean-germiest-home-items\">National Sanitation Foundation<\/a> ranked pet bowls as the fourth germiest item in the home, after the kitchen sponge, sink, and toothbrush holder. They recommend running the bowls through the dishwasher or scrubbing them thoroughly with hot soapy water.<\/p>\n<p>It makes sense, right? Imagine making a plate of food and grabbing a dirty, used dish.
