\n Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden on Thursday said he intends to debate President Trump, but that \u201cvery competent people\u201d urged him not to do so without a fact checker on stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been recommended to me by a number of very competent people who know their way around, including leading Republicans, that I shouldn\u2019t debate Trump unless there\u2019s a fact checker on the ground\u2026 saying that\u2019s true, that\u2019s not true. But look, I think everybody knows this man has a somewhat pathological tendency not to tell the truth,\u201d Biden said in an MSNBC interview.<\/p>\n

Biden swatted away House Speaker Nancy Pelosi\u2019s call for him to drop out of the debates against Trump.<\/p>\n

Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Biden should not \u201clegitimize a conversation with [Trump]\u201d because he lacks \u201cany association with truth.\u201d She also said Biden should deny the president an opportunity to \u201cact in a way that is beneath the dignity of the presidency.\u201d<\/p>\n

The former vice president told MSNBC that \u201cas long as the Commission [on Presidential Debates] continues down the straight and narrow as they have, I\u2019m going to debate him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m gonna be a fact checker on the floor, while I\u2019m debating him,\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n

Trump senses an opportunity against Biden after using debating forums to crush a series<\/a> of competitors in 2016. Trump often claims Biden, 77, is senile, and on Wednesday\u00a0suggested that Biden be drug-tested\u00a0before the debates to make sure he doesn\u2019t use performance-enhancing drugs.<\/p>\n

In the MSNBC interview, Biden praised news<\/a> outlets for \u201cfact checking\u201d Trump supporters speaking at this week\u2019s mostly virtual Republican National Convention.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe vast majority, with notable exceptions, of the news media<\/a> have been fact checking things they have been saying during the convention, and it\u2019s just one lie after another \u2014 lying, lying, lying, lying \u2014 one after another,\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n

Biden also slammed Trump\u2019s reaction to anti-police brutality protests \u2014 most recently featuring Trump\u2019s deployment of federal officers with Democratic Gov. Tony Evers\u2019 consent to quell rioting, arson and violence in Kenosha, Wisconsin.<\/p>\n

Trump is \u201crooting for more violence, not less,\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n

Biden also faulted Trump\u2019s response to the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s assume we finally do get a vaccine, and it works. How much credibility are we going to have telling people to take it after going through all this stuff they have misrepresented so far?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

This month, Trump unsuccessfully asked the Commission on Presidential Debates to reschedule one of the debates with Biden to early September, so voters could tune in before casting mail-in ballots.<\/p>\n

Biden\u2019s campaign refused Trump\u2019s request for more than three debates.<\/p>\n

The first debate is scheduled for Sept. 29 in Cleveland, Ohio, followed by an Oct. 15 debate in Miami, Florida, and an Oct. 22 debate in Nashville, Tennessee.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
