On the other, its central bank digital currency (CBDC) project lacks the anonymity standards of private cryptocurrencies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, last week the EU lawmakers made a vital step to embrace privacy in the space of citizens\u2019 digital identities. On Feb. 9, the Industry, Research and Energy Committee included the standard of zero-knowledge proofs in its amendments to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/strategy-and-policy\/priorities-2019-2024\/europe-fit-digital-age\/european-digital-identity_en\">European digital identity framework<\/a> (eID). The latest update was voted in by 55 votes to 8 in the Committee \u2014 the draft will now proceed to the Trilogue phase of negotiations. <\/p>\n<p>While the latest draft is still not available publicly, the press release <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20230206IPR72110\/meps-back-plans-for-an-eu-wide-digital-wallet\">specifies<\/a> that the EU citizens would be granted full control of their data and the option to decide what information to share and with whom:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe new eID would allow citizens to identify and authenticate themselves online (via a European digital identity wallet) without having to resort to commercial providers, as is the case today &#8211; a practice that raised trust, security and privacy concerns.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As Jonas Fredriksen, the Senior Director for EU Government Affairs at Circle has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/europe4crypto\/status\/1625539866892156933\">noted<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe proposal would facilitate the emergence of new business models and opportunities in the digital economy, as companies develop innovative products and services that rely on zero-knowledge proofs and eID solutions.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Zero-knowledge proofs have recently been at the center of researchers&#8217; attention as a possible means to ensure regulatory compliance and privacy in digital currencies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The joint paper by the San Francisco-based Mina Foundation, operator of the Mina Protocol; German Hauck Aufh\u00e4user Lampe bank; and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust of the University of Luxembourg showed how exactly the zero proofs could be connected to Europe\u2019s eIDAS electronic identity system. <\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>Related: <\/u><\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Polygon tests zero-knowledge rollups, mainnet integration inbound<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, not everyone is convinced by that solution.
