\n Thieves swiped an $18 million 17th century painting called \u201cTwo Laughing Boys\u201d from a museum in the Netherlands this week \u2014 the third time the artwork has been stolen, authorities said.<\/p>\n

The 1626 canvas by Dutch Golden Age master Frans Hals was swiped during a burglary at the Hofje van Mevrouw van Aerden museum in Leerdam early Wednesday, police said Thursday.<\/p>\n

Thieves previously stole the painting, depicting two laughing boys with a mug of beer, from the same museum in 2011 and 1988. It was recovered after six months and three years, respectively.<\/p>\n

\u201cAround 3:30 a.m. the alarm went off, and agents went straight to the museum,\u201d police said in a statement, calling for witnesses. \u201cAfter the museum\u2019s manager could grant access to the area and building, it emerged that the back door had been forced open and one painting had been stolen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Authorities called on forensic investigators and art theft experts for an \u201cextensive investigation,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n

Dutch art detective Arthur Brand \u2014 dubbed the \u201cIndiana Jones of the art world\u201d \u2014 tweeted that \u201cthe hunt is on\u201d after \u201cthis very important and precious painting\u201d was stolen on the 54th anniversary of Hals\u2019 death.<\/p>\n

Brand estimated that the painting is worth around $18 million, according to Dutch broadcaster RTL Nieuws.<\/p>\n

\u201cCriminals know that major museums have sufficient security,\u201d he told the outlet, adding that smaller regional museums might not. \u201cThey probably concluded it\u2019s worth a lot of money, and it\u2019s relatively easy to steal.\u201d<\/p>\n

The theft marked the second time a painting was stolen from a Dutch museum closed to the public due to COVID-19.<\/p>\n

Back in March, burglars swiped the Vincent van Gogh painting \u201cParsonage Garden at Nuenen in Spring\u201d from the Singer Laren Museum on what would have been the painter\u2019s 167th birthday.<\/p>\n
