\n When it came to finding a replacement penis after an unfortunate amputation, Richard Stamp knew he better shop around.<\/p>\n

Stamp, the 54-year-old star of Britain\u2019s new Channel 5 documentary \u201cShopping For a New Penis,\u201d was diagnosed with penile cancer after discovering a lump in 2018.<\/p>\n

Now, the Londoner with 20 years experience as an actor and circus clown is on a quest to find the perfect penile replacement. The journey, he said, has shown him \u201cwhat the world has to offer,\u201d from inflatable prosthetics to stem-cell regeneration.<\/p>\n

After discovering a lump and mounting pain while travel<\/a>ing in Cambodia, Stamp waited two months before seeing a physician in Adelaide, Australia. He recalled how his doctor, coincidentally named Dr. Cox, delivered the difficult diagnosis, telling him that his \u201cc-\u2009-\u2009k\u2019s going to come off.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything was spinning around,\u201d he told the Mirror. \u201cThat [was] the worst moment of my lifetime.\u201d<\/p>\n

He later sought a second opinion at St George\u2019s Hospital in London, home to Europe\u2019s leading penile oncologists. The pain, he had told doctors, had \u201cbuilt up over time,\u201d so that even penetration \u201creally hurt.\u201d As a result, the father of two from a previous marriage had begun avoiding sex with his now-ex-partner Angie. They had been together two years before finding out that Stamp\u2019s penis would have to be amputated.<\/p>\n

Dr. Cox, who is also app<\/a>earing in the new series<\/a>, officially broke the news<\/a> to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m really angry I let it get that far. I feel a complete fool. I could kick myself, because I could have saved it,\u201d he claimed.<\/p>\n

As the surgery to remove his penis got closer, he felt an increasing sense of dread.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember before the operation, thinking, \u2018I\u2019m going to run away,\u2019\u2009\u201d he said. \u201cThen the realization is where am I going to run to? If I don\u2019t do this, I\u2019m going to die. Maybe it sounds crazy if you\u2019re not a bloke, but living without a penis makes you question who you are.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the surgery and his split from Angie, Stamp managed to cultivate a sex life with other women, albeit a challenging one.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was grateful I could still orgasm,\u201d he said, without sharing details on exactly how, \u201cbut then I had to work out how to do that with a partner, how to share my new body with someone. But some women don\u2019t mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

After traveling the world to meet with surgeons and discuss the possibilities, Stamp is now making plans for a full penile reconstruction, or phalloplasty, in February. The surgeries will involve a graft from the arm and buttocks to create the skin over an implant, which is fitted with a pump that can provide on-demand erections. The process will take approximately three 13-hour operations.<\/p>\n

Stamp, now a motivational speaker for UK-based men\u2019s cancer charity Orchid, hopes his story will empower the men who feel shamed or scared into silence, and educate those who aren\u2019t aware of the disease.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s such a taboo thing to talk about and to experience, and when I found I had penile cancer, I had no idea it even existed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo the message to every man watching this documentary is if there\u2019s something up, get it checked. If you\u2019ve got a girlfriend, boyfriend, whatever, hopefully you\u2019ll be able to talk to them. If you\u2019re on your own, then talk to a friend. The main thing is you must talk to someone. Don\u2019t stick your head in the sand like I did.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
