traffic,\u00a0warns that most companies are facing a tough year-over-year holiday season comparison. But pre-pandemic data tell a different story. <\/p>\n<p> In a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.placer.ai\/blog\/how-are-target-walmart-and-wholesale-clubs-faring-in-2023\" class=\"icon none\">report<\/a> on how Target Corp.<br \/>\n        TGT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207799045\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.71%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Walmart Inc.<br \/>\n        WMT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207374728\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.64%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Costco Wholesale Corp.<br \/>\n        COST,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/201191698\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.21%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       BJ\u2019s Wholesale Club Holdings Inc.<br \/>\n        BJ,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203668982\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.66%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Sam\u2019s Club are faring, Placer.ai found that the strength of 2021, as shoppers emerged from lockdown, made for a difficult comparison with 2022. \u201cPent-up demand, accumulated savings, and an\u00a0early start\u00a0drove an unusually robust season in 2021, so assessing the success of 2022\u2019s\u00a0holiday season\u00a0is challenging,\u201d Placer.ai wrote. \u201cVisits to Target, Walmart, Costco, BJ\u2019s Wholesale, and Sam\u2019s Club were down in October and November 2022 relative to 2021, likely a result of comparisons to last year\u2019s\u00a0extended season.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       In November, visits to Target were down 3.3% compared to the same period in 2021, with Walmart down 4.5% and Costco down 5.9%. BJ\u2019s Wholesale Club and Sam\u2019s Club were down 4.1% and 2.5%, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>But by December, the year-over-year visit gaps had narrowed significantly, with all brands seeing traffic more or less on par with 2021 numbers, according to Placer.ai. This indicated that superstores still played a major role in consumers\u2019 holiday shopping and party prepping routine, according to the data analytics company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill, traffic data does seem to indicate that the economic difficulties of 2022 have begun to take a toll on consumers \u2013 January visits were down for almost all superstore chains analyzed, with the exception of Target that seems to be continuing its\u00a0winning streak\u00a0in the new year,\u201d Placer.ai said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Top stock picks, killer brands and \u2018TikTokification\u2019: what\u2019s ahead for retail in 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Visits to Target in January 2023 were up 4% compared with January 2022, although Walmart was down 4.5% and Costco declined 5.2%. BJ\u2019s Wholesale Club and Sam\u2019s Club were down 6.2% and 3.3%, respectively.<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetTweet\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetTweet\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"dynamic-inset-container article__inset__dynamic \">\n<style>\n            iframe.twitter-tweet {\n                width: 100% !important;\n            }\n        <\/style>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>\n            <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Placer_ai\/status\/1625916843482284042\"><\/a>\n            <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>        <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       However, comparisons with 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic hit, painted a much rosier picture, according to Placer.ai. \u201cWhile November 2022 visits were slightly lower than November 2019 visits \u2013 likely due to the\u00a0reduced importance of Black Friday, year-over-three-year (Yo3Y) visits in October and December 2022 were up almost across the board,\u201d the analytics company wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Target and Sam\u2019s Club, which is owned by Walmart, posted the biggest gains over the three-year period, although Walmart saw the biggest visit slump. However, citing its location intelligence, Placer.ai says the traffic dip was \u201clikely just a temporary setback.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walmart reports its fourth-quarter results on Feb. 21 and Target reports its fourth-quarter results on Feb. 28. Costco reports its fiscal second-quarter results on March 2 and BJ\u2019s Wholesale Club reports its fourth-quarter results on March 9.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>See Now: Bed Bath &amp; Beyond had a rough week. BJ\u2019s Wholesale Club is up 13.6%.
