It really is a remarkable thing that he hasn\u2019t gone to East Palestine to see what h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened there,\u201d Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas)\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2Ftedcruz%2Fstatus%2F1626249580151971844%3Fs%3D20&amp;data=05%7C01%7CRZilbermints%40TheHill.com%7C1af8a6f025b9424caac508db1129f10b%7C9e5488e2e83844f6886cc7608242767e%7C0%7C0%7C638122644059877715%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=utZC0xiXNBeFH22%2B63grb5axpCye%2FEzWMfz%2Fqe22VfU%3D&amp;reserved=0\">said<\/a>\u00a0on Fox Business this week. \u201cHe hasn\u2019t come to Congress to explain what happened. For whatever reason, the Secretary seems to fill his days with politics. I know he has aspirations, but he actually has a day job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Warren Davidson (R-Ohio) floated impeaching Buttigieg over how he has handled the derailment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope he does resign, and if he doesn\u2019t, there\u2019s a long list of impeachment criteria,\u201d Davidson told conservative outlet\u00a0Real America\u2019s Voice\u00a0Thursday. \u201cI never would have thought we\u2019d see a point where we need to impeach a Secretary of Transportation, butdaggon, how many failures have to happen on his watch before we call it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said this week that the White House has \u201cabsolute confidence\u201d in Buttigieg.<\/p>\n<p>The derailment of a Norfolk Southern train in East Palestine, Ohio, on Feb. 3 released chemicals, including toxic vinyl chloride, into the surrounding community, prompting a temporary evacuation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>State and federal authorities have said that the area\u2019s air and water are now safe, but residents remain fearful and concerned.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle are questioning FEMA about why it isn\u2019t providing emergency assistance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Bill Johnson (R-Ohio), who represents East Palestine, led a letter signed by the entire Ohio congressional delegation urging FEMA to provide assistance.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson also told The Hill in a written statement that there may be room for congressional or administrative action once investigations on the issue are complete.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cCongress and the administration must take a close look at the findings to determine what policies to modify and\/or implement to better prevent anything like this from happening again,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Sen. Sherrod Brown (D) has called on DeWine to declare an emergency, though DeWine\u2019s office has said that it was told by FEMA that it was not eligible for assistance\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A FEMA official\u00a0told reporters Friday\u00a0that the agency \u201ccontinues to have ongoing conversations with the governor\u2019s office\u201d on the state\u2019s support needs. Administration officials also emphasized a commitment from\u00a0Norfolk Southern to pay for cleanup and other costs.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Beyond the issue of FEMA, Republicans have sent mixed messages on water quality.<\/p>\n<p>The state has said testing indicated that municipal water in East Palestine is safe, but Gov. Mike DeWine (R) has\u00a0also told residents to drink bottled water\u00a0out of an \u201cabundance of caution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) has also said that he would drink bottled water, and posted a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2FJDVance1%2Fstatus%2F1626305927207854089%3Fs%3D20&amp;data=05%7C01%7CRZilbermints%40TheHill.com%7C1af8a6f025b9424caac508db1129f10b%7C9e5488e2e83844f6886cc7608242767e%7C0%7C0%7C638122644059877715%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=Zl%2FgU75tmMYokbYeJ1wZuM%2FTnWxz6B1DrKt2XIzErfk%3D&amp;reserved=0\">video<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday showing what appeared to be chemicals in a creek, saying there were \u201cdead worms and dead fish all throughout this water.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Meanwhile, Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Texas), chair of the House Transportation and Infrastructure subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ed to East Palestine and posted a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2FRepTroyNehls%2Fstatus%2F1626365738540728323%3Fs%3D20&amp;data=05%7C01%7CRZilbermints%40TheHill.com%7C1af8a6f025b9424caac508db1129f10b%7C9e5488e2e83844f6886cc7608242767e%7C0%7C0%7C638122644059877715%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=84zZztwwSBVXLgdx736VJDFU1n8jw1W67KloNs3y2ow%3D&amp;reserved=0\">video<\/a>\u00a0of himself drinking water that he said came from its taps \u2014 saying that he was helping the mayor of East Palestine get the word out that the tap water is safe to drink.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s clear is there is a lot of work to do. I thank the first responders and personnel on site for all their efforts thus far. I will work in a bipartisan effort to ensure our freight rail system is as safe as possible and prevent tragedies like this from occurring again,\u201d Nehls said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), too, has criticized the administration\u2019s timeliness.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt is unacceptable that it took nearly two weeks for a senior Administration official to show up,\u201d he said in a statement on EPA Administrator Michael Regan\u2019s visit to the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>DeWine, for this part, called on Congress to take action if it is true that the railroad was not required to notify the state about the chemicals on the train because they were not considered high hazardous materials, Fox 19\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Vance supported the call for labeling the materials as hazardous, though he said that the responsibility lies not only with Congress but also with the Transportation Department.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to let Congress off the hook here because Congress can legislate a solution to this problem and that\u2019s exactly what I\u2019m going to try to do. We should have some legislation coming out here to that effect in the next few days, but look, the Department of Transportation can act on this issue too.
