What&#039;s true and what&#039;s false?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>A train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio,  prompted an array of false and misleading claims on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a>, where posts built on\u00a0speculation, assumptions or outright falsehoods accumulated thousands of shares and millions of views.<\/p>\n<p>The incident began shortly before 9 p.m. Feb. 3 when a Norfolk Southern train left the tracks while\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ing from Madison, Illinois, to Conway, Pennsylvania. A total of 38 cars derailed and a fire ensued, damaging another 12 cars, according to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ntsb.gov\/news\/press-releases\/Pages\/NR20230214.aspx\">National Transportation Safety Board<\/a>. There were 20 cars carrying hazardous materials, 11 of which derailed.<\/p>\n<p>Residents were <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovMikeDeWine\/status\/1622409784593993729\">ordered to evacuate<\/a> when, due to the threat of a possible explosion, authorities chose to breach<strong>\u00a0five tankers<\/strong> filled with vinyl chloride, sending hydrogen chloride and phosgene, a toxic gas, into the air.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the claims that spread most\u00a0online in the wake of the chaos.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong>Follow us on Facebook!<\/strong>\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/usatodayfactcheck\">Like our page to get updates throughout the day on our latest debunks<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Claim_The_Ohio_River_is_being_poisoned\"><\/span>Claim: The Ohio River is being poisoned\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>Example post (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/100056684626967\/videos\/913368596676923\/\">direct link<\/a>,<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/2-14-2023-facebook-post-by-christopher-wallace\"> archive link<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The claim overstates the extent to which hazardous chemicals have been detected in the river at this point.<\/p>\n<p>Low levels of butyl acrylate made their way to the Ohio River through Little Beaver Creek, a tributary near the border between Ohio and Pennsylvania, according to Ohio Environmental Protection Agency spokesperson James Lee.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong>Fact check: <\/strong>False claim that a &#8216;massive death plume&#8217; is raining down hydrochloric acid in Ohio<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Experts previously said a plume of contaminants was moving along the Ohio River, though Lee added the chemical gets less concentrated as it travels downstream.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bgsu.edu\/arts-and-sciences\/biological-sciences\/faculty-and-staff.html\">James Metcalf<\/a>, a professor of biological <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a>s at Bowling Green State University in Ohio with expertise in environmental toxicology, said exposure to the chemical in high doses can cause \u201cacute effects such as skin irritation and breathing difficulties,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/niosh\/npg\/npgd0075.html\">citing the CDC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But he said the water treatment systems and latest info from the Environmental Protection Agency indicate &#8220;it is likely that these concentrations are not at a level of public health concern.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That was echoed in a Feb. 17 <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> conference with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cph.uky.edu\/people\/erin-haynes\">Erin Haynes<\/a>, chair of the University of Kentucky College of Public Health\u2019s Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a big claim, to state the entire river is poisonous,\u201d Haynes said.<\/p>\n<p>Haynes noted the prevalence of the chemical depends on the local water treatment facility and their capacity to remove it from the water supply.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Claim_The_government_has_locked_down_East_Palestine\"><\/span>Claim:\u00a0The government has locked down East Palestine<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>Example post (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=634992608634881&amp;set=a.504337511700392&amp;type=3&amp;__xts__%5B0%5D=68.ARAnczbr75gbbAp3qePRMxUkIP8RaIw4keJCSSmtaxjML3nYt-mpuN9Y9h_ZIAptjWy7zBjS3os6UCkkVEC3MHwfTUm8V1HDlGH7yWNj4KBJeEBQnVxqtZIkslGRdb4fMoL-1iCXCc6f_DqGisA6fUsEke0wg_UqloTx-ybncPSv0MM21NZoxrzVoHqm1myuf89iRHlgkCli7vVVhdrt6tUCsOHeWavCxfLEqOtSA42Eke6hQTFh-GTDKA8t6trNw39YwTHlLbJ5TLdEtg_nipnJqbUuPIjR\">direct link<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/eastpalestinelockdown\">archive link<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>East Palestine was placed under a state of emergency and\u00a0temporary evacuation orders, but there is no indication citizens are being prevented from traveling in and out of the town.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;East Palestine is not in lockdown,&#8221; Lee said in an email to USA TODAY.<\/p>\n<p>Immediately after the train derailment on Feb. 3, about half the\u00a04,761 residents of East Palestine were told to evacuate, USA TODAY previously reported. More than 500 of them chose to stay in their homes, though.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">More: <\/strong>Ohio Gov. Teresa McGuire, director of the Columbiana County Humane Society, which covers East Palestine, told the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldstaronline.com\/news\/local-news\/2023\/02\/animals-sick-dying-following-derailment-are-suspect\/\">Herald-Star<\/a> she has been compiling a list of animals possibly sickened from exposure to toxic chemicals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">More: <\/strong>Residents seek answers over Ohio train derailment<\/span><\/p>\n<p>McGuire said she had received reports from more than 20 families as of Feb. 13, and some of the animals were diagnosed by their veterinarian with vinyl chloride poisoning.<\/p>\n<p>Tissue samples from a six-week-old beef calf that died Feb. 11 in an area about two miles from East Palestine have been sent to the Ohio Department of Agriculture&#8217;s Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory to see if a cause of death can be determined, according to a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ema.ohio.gov\/media-publications\/news\/east-palestine-update-021623-1315\">Feb. 16 news release<\/a>\u00a0from the Ohio Emergency Management Agency.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0department &#8220;continues to assure Ohioans that its food supply is safe and the risk to livestock remains low,&#8221; But the plan was never to pay out that money directly, and the company&#8217;s financial commitment has grown since.<\/p>\n<p>Spielmaker said the company is now sending $1,000 checks to\u00a0residents of East Palestine.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">More: <\/strong>Trains are becoming less safe.
