Joe Ruby, the mind behind \u201cScooby-Doo,\u201d has died at 87 of natural causes. The renowned cartoonist co-created the popular show more than 50 years ago and oversaw its rise to a beloved franchise.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe never stopped writing and creating, even as he aged,\u201d his grandson Benjamin Ruby told Variety.<\/p>\n

In addition to bringing to life the bell-bottomed, mystery-solving gang, Ruby and his partner Ken Spears created several other series<\/a>, including \u201cDynomutt\u201d and \u201cJabberjaw.\u201d The two wrote the first five episodes of \u201cScooby-Doo, Where Are You?\u201d and then supervised the rest of the first season.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were worried it wouldn\u2019t last but one season,\u201d Spears told ScoobyAddicts.com.<\/p>\n

But eventually, Fred, Velma, Daphne, Shaggy and Scooby became household names. The series saw several reboots and theatrical releases, including Warner Bros.\u2019 2002 live-action flick starring Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar. It was followed in 2013 with an animated film, also from Warner Bros. This year saw a CGI remake, \u201cScoob!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ruby served in the Army and studied art before landing as an animator with Walt Disney Productions. He then went on to work in editing at Hanna-Barbera Productions, where he met Spears. At the time, the animation studio was looking for more wholesome childhood programming amid pressure from parent groups. After multiple iterations, they landed on a gang of teens who solved supernatural mysteries with their clumsy Great Dane, originally named Too Much.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve tried to figure out what made people like \u2018Scooby-Doo\u2019 so much,\u201d Frank Welker, who\u2019s voiced square peg Fred Jones on the series since Day 1 (and later added the voice of Scooby-Doo), told The Post last year. \u201cI\u2019m totally blown away that we\u2019ve been on for 50 years. If you put a show like \u2018SpongeBob SquarePants\u2019 next to \u2018Scooby\u2019 it\u2019s like, \u2018Whoa! Time warp!\u2019\u2009\u201d<\/p>\n

After Ruby and Spears hit it big with \u201cScooby-Doo,\u201d they started their own production company with ABC in 1977, churning out hits including \u201cMister T,\u201d \u201cAlvin and the Chipmunks,\u201d \u201cSuperman,\u201d \u201cThundarr the Barbarian,\u201d \u201cFangface\u201d and \u201cThe Plastic Man Comedy-Adventure Hour.\u201d<\/p>\n

In later years, Ruby remained passionate about comic books and art.\u00a0He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Carole, four children and 10 grandchildren.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
