Gomez confirmed the death, saying O&#8217;Connell, who served in the city for 45 years as a priest and later a bishop, \u201cpassed away unexpectedly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a shock and I have no words to express my sadness,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/lacatholics.org\/statement-from-archbishop-gomez-on-bishop-oconnell\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Gomez said in a statement;cpos:2;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Gomez said in a statement<\/a>, calling him \u201ca good friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBishop Dave was a man of deep prayer who had a great love for Our Blessed Mother,\u201d he said. \u201cHe was a peacemaker with a heart for the poor and the immigrant, and he had a passion for building a community where the sanctity and dignity of every human life was honored and protected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hacienda Heights is an unincorporated community about 20 miles (30 kilometers) east of downtown Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
