Here\u2019s the good <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>\u2014blue light is not that big of a deal. Allow me to explain.<\/p>\n<p>The claims about blue light are everywhere. If you\u2019ve purchased glasses in recent years, you\u2019ve probably even been pitched\u00a0blue-blocking lenses. A lot of these claims sound perfectly reasonable, which has led many people to believe them. Also known as \u201chigh-energy visible\u201d (HEV) light, it\u2019s one of the colors of visible light that can be seen by human eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Colors of light have different wavelengths, and blue light is a short wavelength. The shorter the wavelength, the higher the energy. That means blue light produces higher amounts of energy than other colors\u2014hence the name \u201chigh-energy visible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One unique thing about blue light is it can\u2019t be effectively filtered by human eyes. Blue light can easily pass through the eye to the retina, and since displays on digital devices tend to emit blue light, a lot of it is entering our eyes every day. That\u2019s where the concerns come from.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Do_Blue_Light_Glasses_Do\"><\/span>What Do Blue Light Glasses Do?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We can\u2019t talk about blue light without talking about \u201cBlue Light Glasses\u201d or \u201cBlue-Blocking Lenses.\u201d Blue light-blocking products\u2014especially glasses\u2014have become very common in recent years. Let\u2019s talk about what these actually do.<\/p>\n<p>Blue Light Glasses are incredibly simple. They feature lenses that have been tinted in a way that lets red, orange, yellow, and green light through, but not blue, indigo, and violet. Not <em>all<\/em> blue light is blocked, but they block much more than your eyes can do on their own.<\/p>\n<p>Wearing blue light glasses has a similar effect as Night Shift or Night Light modes on phones and computers. You see the world with a more yellow\/orange tint. The question is, does this actually have any benefit?<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Comfort_vs_Physiology\"><\/span>Comfort vs. Physiology<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Okay, so blue light is real, and blue light glasses do actually work\u2014in the sense that they filter out some blue light. But blocking blue light is mostly a solution hunting for a problem. Let\u2019s talk about the difference between comfort and real physiological effects.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no question that bright, blue light from a display can feel very harsh on your eyes. If you\u2019ve ever been blinded by your phone screen in the middle of the night, you know exactly what I mean. Dark Mode and Night Light do actually make screens feel easier on our eyes.<\/p>\n<p>That blast of blue light was jarring, but did it do any physiological harm? Quite a few studies have been done on blue light\u2019s effect on eyes. The\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/eye-health\/tips-prevention\/are-computer-glasses-worth-it\">American Academy of Ophthalmology<\/a>\u00a0(AAO) says there is currently no scientific evidence that blue light damages eyes or causes strain. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=e7eab128eb8d1c53e14db14f4c632447&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ajo.com%2Farticle%2FS0002-9394%2821%2900072-6%2Ffulltext&amp;cuid=xid:{xid}&amp;___trxnet=vg\" data-trxnetwork=\"vg\">A recent study<\/a>\u00a0also suggests blue light glasses offer no reduction in eye strain.<\/p>\n<p>What about sleep? Surely blue light affects our sleep cycles, and phone screens are the root of all our sleep problems, right? The common claim is blue light stops our production of melatonin, which is a hormone that helps us sleep. This is technically true, but you might be surprised by the details.<\/p>\n<p>A <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30311830\/\">2019 study<\/a> found that looking at screens does indeed slow the secretion of melatonin. However, participants\u2019 melatonin levels returned to normal levels just 15 minutes after they stopped looking at screens. They didn\u2019t even need fancy glasses.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>Like many things, the concerns about blue light are mostly overblown. While there are <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34030534\/\">some valid use cases for blue light glasses<\/a>, many people are conflating blue light being <em>uncomfortable<\/em>\u00a0to look at with it doing actual damage to their eyes and sleep.
