Scott Fitzgerald famously wrote, in his notes on <em>The Last Tycoon<\/em>. To which Cher Horowitz in <em>Clueless<\/em> would say: \u201cUgh, as if!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Nearly 30 years after she spoke those iconic lines, we are witnessing the second act in the career of Alicia Silverstone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Her Super Bowl ad for shopping platform Rakuten, where she slipped back into Cher\u2019s yellow tartan skirt to recreate the <em>Clueless<\/em> debate scene, went viral (as did her first TikTok <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earance, again as Cher, spoofing the \u201cas if!\u201d scene with her son Bear), returning Silverstone to the top of the pop culture conversation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    In the independent film world, Silverstone has never been hotter. With roles in <em>The Lodge <\/em>\u2014the 2019 Sundance chiller from <em>Goodnight Mommy<\/em> directors Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz \u2014 and Jennifer Reeder\u2019s new meta-horror film <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/perpetrator\/\" id=\"auto-tag_perpetrator\" data-tag=\"perpetrator\">Perpetrator<\/em><\/a>, which premiered in the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Film Festival this week, the former teen idol is quietly reinventing herself as an indie Scream Queen. And it\u2019s not just horror. At South by SouthWest next month, Silverstone will be seen alongside Hasan Minhaj and Rizwan Manji in Imran J. Khan\u2019s family dramedy <em>Mustache. <\/em>Grant Singer\u2019s crime thriller <em>Reptile<\/em>, where she stars alongside Benicio Del Toro and Justin Timberlake, comes out later this year. I\u2019m really happy with my life. Just seeing Benicio Del Toro again on the set of <em>Reptiles<\/em>. We haven\u2019t worked together for 27 years [since the Silverstone-produced <em>Excess Baggage<\/em> in 1997]. I thought: \u2018it\u2019s been an incredible journey\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The journey hasn\u2019t always been smooth. Silverstone was thrust into the limelight as a teenager, after her debut film, <em>The Crush<\/em>, in which she plays a 14-year-old stalker trying to seduce a 30-something journalist, played by Cary Elwes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cThings started to happen right away. At the MTV Movie Awards, I won best newcomer and best villain,\u201d she recalls. \u201cThen came the Aerosmith videos [<em>Cryin<\/em>, <em>Amazing<\/em>, <em>Crazy<\/em>] and I was working a ton, I was working in France with Alain Corneau, I did films with James Gandolfini [Corneau\u2019s <em>New World<\/em>], with Jeff Goldblum and Christine Lahti [1995 thriller <em>Hideaway<\/em>], all these different <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a>. I was very young but I took my acting very seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Those Aerosmith videos caught the eye of Amy Heckerling, who thought Silverstone would be perfect for her new project, a coming-of-age comedy loosely based on Jane Austen\u2019s <em>Emma<\/em>, but set in 1990s Beverly Hills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <em>Clueless<\/em> was born. The film was an instant hit and shot Silverstone to the top of the Hollywood A-list.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cWhen <em>Clueless<\/em> came out, it really shifted. I had been the girl from <em>Crush<\/em>, then I was the Aerosmith chick, and then, after that, I was Cher,\u201d she says, \u201cIt was very complicated and I don\u2019t think I knew how to manage it: I didn\u2019t have the foundation, the good tools to deal with it, I wasn\u2019t prepared for it in any way, shape, or form. When, in 1995, Silverstone signed a $10 million two-picture pact with Columbia-TriStar, the <em>L.A. Times<\/em> wrote a story under the headline: \u201cCarrey! Schwarzennegger! Stallone! Silverstone?\u201d suggesting Silverstone\u2019s deal was emblematic of the sort of unsustainable salary inflation that was ruining Hollywood. While it might be ok for those male stars to get paid $20 million a picture, the piece argued, it was crazy to hand half that (for two films) to that blond from <em>Clueless<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Then came <em>Batman &amp; Robin<\/em>. Joel Schumacher\u2019s star-packed superhero flick \u2014 Clooney! Schwarzenegger! O\u2019Donnell! \u2014 was the colossal flop of 1997. Panned by critics for its OTT performances and farcical, rubber-molded outfits \u2014 Silverstone shudders when she recalls her Batgirl costume \u201cit was really hard to get in and really, really hard to get out of\u201d\u2014 it earned Silverstone the dubious honor of a Razzie for worst supporting actress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    While she can still find some positives from the <em>Batman &amp; Robin<\/em> experience \u2014\u201dworking with Michael Gough [who played Alfred] was magical. We had a very special bond. And George Clooney was so big brother-kind to me\u201d \u2014the film marked a low point. It was the beginning of the end of Alicia Silverstone as a 90s screen icon. I found my passion for writing books on healing and health. <em>The Kind Diet <\/em>books came a bit later but that was the start of the journey there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    She never fully stopped acting, but for the next decade, Silverstone seemed content to dip in and out, mostly playing roles tailored to her Cher persona \u2014 as the matrimonial attorney\/matchmaker in NBC\u2019s short-lived series <em>Miss Match<\/em> (which got her a Golden Globe nomination), or the naive and bubbly stylist in Queen Latifah vehicle <em>Beauty Shop <\/em>(2005).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    And she discovered the theater, making her Broadway debut alongside Kathleen Turner and Jason Biggs in a stage version of <em>The Graduate<\/em> in 2002, appearing in David Mamet\u2019s <em>Boston Marriage<\/em> in 2007.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cIt was there, when I was on stage, doing a David Mamet play, being directed by David Mamet, it reminded me how much I really, really love acting, And I was sad I\u2019d let go of so much of it,\u201d Silverstone recalls. \u201cThere were so many amazing opportunities that I said no to, because I didn\u2019t feel able. But after that play, I thought, geez, I\u2019d really love to do that again. So when I came back to the movies, it was sort of continuing the journey I started in the theater. I started to be able to do really interesting things in film too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Interesting like playing the mother of a mysterious boy in Yorgos Lanthimos\u2019 <em>The Killing of a Sacred Deer<\/em> \u2014\u201dworking with Yorgos was a dream. I love his movie <em>Dogtooth<\/em> so much!\u201d she effuses. Interesting like the role as a woman battling doomsday preppers in Drew Mylrea\u2019s sci-fi thriller <em>Last Survivors<\/em>. Interesting like playing the spooky Aunt Hildie in <em>Perpetrator<\/em>, a smokey-voiced blond that seems plucked straight out of 40s film noir.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cI wanted to do the role even before I read the script,\u201d she says of <em>Perpetrator<\/em>, \u201c[director] Jennifer Reeder is just so exciting, everything about her and her movies. She\u2019s so vulnerable and sexy and beautiful and strong. When I met her, I knew this one someone had a voice I hadn\u2019t seen before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Now 46, a generation away from <em>Clueless<\/em>, Silverstone says she\u2019s \u201cdoing life right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cIt\u2019s isn\u2019t easy, being an activist, a mother and an actress all at the same time. But I\u2019m doing my best,\u201d she says. \u201cI continue to do speaking engagements about health and our earth, all of that is really meaningful to me. The most important thing to me is being fully present with my son.
