From there, they were ushered into vans with heavily tinted windows and driven to their cars under police escort.<\/p>\n<p>For Emily Kohrs, these were the moments last May when she realized she wasn\u2019t participating in just any <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2022-midterm-elections-donald-trump-georgia-presidential-8823a1c619ca26be91f8d76b83a9f974\" data-ylk=\"slk:grand jury;cpos:1;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">grand jury<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was the first indication that this was a big freaking deal,\u201d Kohrs told The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>The 30-year-old Fulton County resident who was between jobs suddenly found herself at the center of one of the nation\u2019s most significant legal proceedings. She would become foreperson of the special grand jury selected to investigate whether then-President <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/donald-trump\" data-ylk=\"slk:Donald Trump;cpos:2;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Donald Trump<\/a> and his Republican associates illegally meddled in Georgia\u2019s 2020 presidential election. The case has emerged as one of Trump\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-investigation-georgia-prosecutor-0c62d7884f0150c93f5e555333ae23d2\" data-ylk=\"slk:most glaring legal vulnerabilities;cpos:3;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">most glaring legal vulnerabilities<\/a> as he mounts a third presidential campaign, in part because <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/election-2020-joe-biden-donald-trump-georgia-elections-a7b4aa4d8ce3bf52301ddbe620c6bff6\" data-ylk=\"slk:he was recorded;cpos:4;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">he was recorded<\/a> asking state election officials to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-raffensperger-phone-call-georgia-d503c8b4e58f7cd648fbf9a746131ec9\" data-ylk='slk:\u201cfind 11,780 votes\";cpos:5;pos:1' class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">\u201cfind 11,780 votes&#8221;<\/a> for him.<\/p>\n<p>For the next eight months, Kohrs and her fellow jurors would hear testimony from 75 witnesses, ranging from some of Trump\u2019s most prominent allies to local election workers. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-georgia-election-investigation-grand-jury-documents-40535dd2b4401e804af515229c6c2d68\" data-ylk=\"slk:Portions of the panel\u2019s final report;cpos:6;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Portions of the panel\u2019s final report<\/a> released last Thursday said jurors believed that \u201cone or more witnesses\u201d committed perjury and urged local prosecutors to bring charges. The report\u2019s recommendations for charges on other issues, including potential attempts to influence the election, remain secret for now.<\/p>\n<p>The AP identified Kohrs after her name was included on subpoenas obtained through open records requests. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney advised Kohrs and other jurors on what they could and could not share publicly, including in interviews with the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During a lengthy recent interview, Kohrs complied with the judge\u2019s instructions not to discuss details related to the jury\u2019s deliberations. She also declined to talk about unpublished portions of the panel\u2019s final report.<\/p>\n<p>But her <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> characterizations provided unusual insight into a process that is typically cloaked in secrecy.<\/p>\n<p>Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who was on the receiving end of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/donald-trump-joe-biden-arts-and-entertainment-elections-georgia-2b27f4c92919556bf6548117648693b7\" data-ylk=\"slk:Trump\u2019s pressure campaign;cpos:7;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Trump\u2019s pressure campaign<\/a>, was \u201ca really geeky kind of funny,\u201d she said. State House Speaker David Ralston, who died in November, was hilarious and had the room in stitches. And Gov. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/brian-p-kemp\" data-ylk=\"slk:Brian Kemp;cpos:8;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Brian Kemp<\/a>, who succeeded in delaying his <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earance until after his reelection in November, seemed unhappy to be there.<\/p>\n<p>Kohrs was fascinated by an explainer on Georgia\u2019s voting machines offered by a former Dominion Voting Systems executive. She also enjoyed learning about the inner workings of the White House from Cassidy Hutchinson, who Kohrs said was much more forthcoming than her old boss, former White House chief of staff <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/mark-meadows\" data-ylk=\"slk:Mark Meadows;cpos:9;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Mark Meadows<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kohrs sketched witnesses in her notebook as they spoke and was tickled when Bobby Christine, the former U.S. attorney for Georgia\u2019s Southern District, complimented her \u201cremarkable talent.\u201d When the jurors\u2019 notes were taken for shredding after their work was done, she managed to salvage two sketches \u2014 U.S. Sen. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/lindsey-graham\" data-ylk=\"slk:Lindsey Graham;cpos:10;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Lindsey Graham<\/a> and Marc Short, who served as chief of staff to former Vice President <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/michael-pence\" data-ylk=\"slk:Mike Pence;cpos:11;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Mike Pence<\/a> \u2014 because there were no notes on those pages.<\/p>\n<p>After Graham tried so hard to avoid testifying \u2014 taking his fight all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court \u2014 Kohrs was surprised when he politely answered questions and even joked with jurors.<\/p>\n<p>Former New York mayor and Trump attorney <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:12;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/rudolph-giuliani\" data-ylk=\"slk:Rudy Giuliani;cpos:12;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Rudy Giuliani<\/a> was funny and invoked privilege to avoid answering many questions but \u201cgenuinely seemed to consider\u201d whether it was merited before declining to answer, she said.<\/p>\n<p>When witnesses refused to answer almost every question, the lawyers would engage in what Kohrs came to think of as \u201cshow and tell.\u201d The lawyers would show video of the person appearing on television or testifying before the U.S. House committee that investigated <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:13;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/capitol-siege\" data-ylk=\"slk:the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol;cpos:13;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol<\/a>, periodically asking the witness to confirm certain things. Then the scratching of pens on paper could be heard as jurors tallied how many times the person invoked the Fifth Amendment.<\/p>\n<p>At least one person who resisted answering questions became much more cooperative when prosecutors offered him immunity in front of the jurors, Kohrs said. Other witnesses came in with immunity deals already in place.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s attorneys have said he was never asked to testify. Kohrs said the grand jury wanted to hear from the former president but didn\u2019t have any real expectation that he would offer meaningful testimony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump was not a battle we picked to fight,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Kohrs didn\u2019t vote in 2020 and was only vaguely aware of controversy swirling in the wake of the election. She didn\u2019t know the specifics of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:14;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/donald-trump-michael-pence-electoral-college-elections-health-2d9bd47a8bd3561682ac46c6b3873a10\" data-ylk=\"slk:Trump\u2019s allegations of widespread election fraud;cpos:14;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Trump\u2019s allegations of widespread election fraud<\/a> or his efforts to reverse his loss. When prosecutors played the then-president\u2019s phone call with Raffensperger on the first day the jurors met to consider evidence, it was the first time Kohrs had heard it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have,&#8221; Trump said on the call.<\/p>\n<p>Though Kohrs said she tends to agree more with Democrats, Kohrs said she doesn\u2019t identify with any political party and prefers to listen to all opinions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I chose a political party, it would be the not-crazy party,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Kohrs called herself a \u201cgeek about the justice system\u201d and noted the challenges some jurors faced balancing their responsibilities on the panel with outside duties. When she eagerly volunteered to be foreperson, she met no resistance from her fellow jurors, who were less enthusiastic about the time-consuming obligation stretching before them, she said.<\/p>\n<p>One of her first duties as foreperson was to sign a big stack of subpoenas.<\/p>\n<p>As the proceedings played out, one of her fellow jurors brought the newspaper every day and pointed out stories about the investigation. Prosecutors, Kohrs said, told jurors they could consume news coverage related to the case but urged them to keep an open mind.<\/p>\n<p>Kohrs said she mostly avoided stories related to the proceedings to avoid forming an opinion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t want to characterize anyone before they walked in the room,\u201d she said. \u201cI felt they all deserved an impartial listener.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of the 26 people on the panel \u2014 23 jurors and three alternates \u2014 16 had to be present for a quorum. There was a core group of between 12 and 16 who showed up almost every day they were in session, Kohrs said, and she could recall only one day when they couldn\u2019t proceed because not enough seats were filled. The most they ever had in the room was 22 \u2014 on the day Giuliani testified.<\/p>\n<p>As the months passed, the grand jurors grew more comfortable with each other and with the four lawyers on Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis\u2019 team who led the proceedings. But they\u2019re not all best friends now that it\u2019s over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not meeting up now. We don\u2019t have a group chat,\u201d Kohrs said.<\/p>\n<p>While the jurors asked to hear from certain witnesses, most witnesses were decided upon by the district attorney\u2019s office.
