around for a while and which goes heavy on the marketing, claiming many firsts and positioning itself as the best in many fields. I took a hard look at Hide.me and its claims to see how it stands up to scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>The short version is that Hide.me has a lot to offer. It\u2019s fast, gets through to streaming services, and does all this at a reasonable price. However, I feel a bit iffy about its privacy, and I don\u2019t like how it fiddles with the truth in some of its marketing material. While it gets the job done, it\u2019s a far cry from the colorful displays I\u2019ve gotten used to reviewing all these VPNs. No map like with NordVPN, no tight design like with Mozilla VPN, just a deeply meh color scheme.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-864601\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/hide-me-main.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Hide.me main interface\" width=\"588\" height=\"600\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>That said, it\u2019s not the most important thing, and at least Hide.me\u2019s designers didn\u2019t go overboard with the bells and whistles like Proton VPN\u2019s did. I have to say, it all works really well: just click on the \u201cenable VPN\u201d button and you\u2019ll connect, and at lightning speed, too.<\/p>\n<p>However, there\u2019s an annoyance. For some reason, the designers decided that the server selection screen should be in another tab, accessed via the bottom of the app. This means that to select a server, you need to go to another menu, select it, then go back to the main screen and connect from there. It\u2019s a little irritating, and it seems unnecessary.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, this is a singular issue, as all other menus and screens follow more conventional wisdom. For example, the settings are clearly laid out on a single screen, with tabs for subsections on the left. The settings are also very flexible. A good example is the split tunneling feature, which lets you choose whether to run the VPN for all programs, or instead include or exclude a set selection.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-864605\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/hide-me-settings.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Hide.me's settings screen\" width=\"598\" height=\"600\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>I like it when you can choose between different ways to implement options, and it speaks well to Hide.me that it lets you mess around like this. Another good example is its multi-hop feature, which lets you connect any server to any server. It has servers set up especially for this purpose, which are accessed through a separate menu also at the bottom of the app.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-864607\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/hide-me-streaming-servers.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Hide.me's streaming servers\" width=\"587\" height=\"600\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m happy to say that I tested all of these servers and all of them worked\u2014I got through to Netflix every time. I\u2019m guessing that Hide.me is using residential IPs or some other kind of networking wizardry to make it work. Whatever the case, it\u2019s impressive. Even better, there\u2019s barely any drop in speed, so there are no endless buffering screens for Hide.me users.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pricing\"><\/span>Pricing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Hide.me is well priced, costing around $45 for 15 months of service, or $3 per month (depending on if you can catch a promotional deal). The duration seems a bit odd, but I have the feeling that its origins lie in some marketing ploy by the company (\u201csign up for a year and get three months free!\u201d), which then turned into a fixture.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Shortly after writing this review, Hide.me adjusted its standard pricing to include a 24-month plan (plus 2 free months) for $3.84\/month. The VPN provider will likely run different promos throughout the year, but the pricing should be within a few cents.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-864603\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/hide-me-pricing.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Hide.me prices\" width=\"1174\" height=\"379\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The main thing is that the service will cost this much in perpetuity. There don\u2019t seem to be any nasty surprises when you renew your subscription, like with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/757119\/surfshark-vs-nordvpn\/\">Surfshark or NordVPN to name but two.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the 15-month plan, you can also go month-to-month\u2014which is a bad idea in terms of cost\u2014or pay $35 for six months, which also doesn\u2019t seem worth it. If you like Hide.me, I would just pay the full price as it beats every other quality VPN out there, with the exception of Private Internet Access, which is $80 for three years. That said, I like that you\u2019re not signing on for three years, so that may give Hide.me an edge.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hidemes_Free_Plan\"><\/span>Hide.me\u2019s Free Plan<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For some, the biggest draw to Hide.me is its free plan, which offers 10GB of bandwidth at no cost. It\u2019s pretty spiffy, though I like it less than <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/856154\/windscribe-vpn-review\/\">Windscribe\u2019s free plan. This is patently false, VPNs do slow you down, it\u2019s just a matter of how much. It\u2019s misleading to claim otherwise, and I\u2019m disappointed that Hide.me resorts to this kind of thing. For some reason, Hide.me makes it kind of hard to find its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=e7eab128eb8d1c53e14db14f4c632447&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fhide.me%2Fen%2Fprivacy&amp;cuid=xid:{xid}&amp;___trxnet=vg\">privacy policy<\/a>. I found some anchor text left in older blog posts, but the actual legal document and any links to it were gone. I ended up having to go to support for it, who, to their credit, answered me in less than 15 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The privacy policy is similar to most others of its kind in that it promises that Hide.me keeps no logs\u00a0of any kind, nor does it keep any personal information on you besides your email address\u2014something you can avoid with a free account. Of course, it will cooperate with law enforcement when forced to do so, but since there\u2019s no data, there\u2019s nothing to share.<\/p>\n<p>As with all VPNs, you\u2019re taking these assurances at face value. However, there are no records of there having been any scandals involving the service, so it all seems above board. That said, I\u2019m still left a little uneasy: while I like the plain language of the privacy policy, it\u2019s buried under mountains of self-congratulatory marketing material.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Hide.me prides itself on being the first VPN to ever undergo an external audit in 2015\u2014a claim that I can\u2019t verify\u2014but then does not link to the audit itself, there\u2019s only a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=e7eab128eb8d1c53e14db14f4c632447&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fhide.me%2Fen%2Fblog%2Fleon-juranic-certifies-hide-me-as-one-of-the-most-private-vpn-provider%2F&amp;cuid=xid:{xid}&amp;___trxnet=vg\">press release<\/a>. Also, there\u2019s no word whether or not an audit has been performed since, only links to Hide.me\u2019s transparency reports.<\/p>\n<p>These transparency reports, which detail how often Hide.me received information requests, are a good thing to have. I much prefer them over warrant canaries or just bland assurances. While running my speed tests, I also made sure to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/725966\/how-to-test-if-your-vpn-is-working-and-spot-vpn-leaks\/\">check for leaks and found none.
