\n Hill Harper says his nine-year run playing Dr. Sheldon Hawkes on \u201cCSI: New York\u201d inspired his top-rated crime\/investigation series<\/a> on HLN.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, it all came out of that [role], of seeing people have a real interest in learning about forensics and everything that goes into an investigation,\u201d Harper, 54, says of \u201cHow It Really Happened with Hill Harper,\u201d now in its fifth season as HLN\u2019s longest-running, most-watched original series.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a way, it\u2019s a combination of those things and the fact that technology<\/a> is continuously evolving \u2014 and, as cases are examined, there\u2019s always something new.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow It Really Happened,\u201d which premiered in 2016, blends archival footage, interviews and expert analysis with Hill (who\u2019s also a producer on the series) providing wraparound narration. This season\u2019s topics include the 1999 murders of three women in Yosemite National Park (airing Sunday at 9 p.m.); the death of Tom Petty; Siegfried & Roy; the murder of Michael Jordan\u2019s father, James Jordan; and the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of the cases we do about celebrities are more about telling their stories. They\u2019re homages,\u201d he says, alluding to a \u201cHow It Really Happened\u201d episode devoted to Prince. \u201cPrince was actually a friend of mine and that episode was something very personal to me. It\u2019s the same with Tom Petty \u2014 I didn\u2019t know him personally, but we\u2019re telling stories of who these people were and what they did \u2026 in a really respectful, supportive, positive way.<\/p>\n

\u2018As cases are examined, there\u2019s always something new.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cWe have to pick and choose,\u201d he says of the subjects covered each season, into which he also has input. \u201cWe\u2019re telling some of these stories because they\u2019re happening right now. It doesn\u2019t take a brain surgeon to tell you that Siegfried & Roy were the original \u2018Tiger Kings,\u2019 \u201d he says, alluding the headline-grabbing Netflix documentary. \u201cAnd while [the ESPN documentary] \u2018The Last Dance\u2019 touched upon the death of Michael Jordan\u2019s father, it didn\u2019t go into it deeply in any kind of way.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are some cases I would like to see in which we take the title of the show and extend it to issues,\u201d he says. \u201cFor instance, and I haven\u2019t been able to sell this yet, something like a \u2018How It Really Happened\u2019 about the murder of 2,000 young men of color in Chicago. I would like to tell the story around Dylann Roof and about that horrible tragedy in the church in South Carolina \u2026 letting people see the true problems with racism and violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hill, who co-stars as Dr. Marcus Andrews opposite Freddie Highmore on ABC\u2019s \u201cThe Good Doctor,\u201d says the medical drama will tackle the pandemic in its first two episodes of the upcoming season \u2014 slated to begin shooting in Vancouver with strict protocols in place.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would be tough to tell a story within a hospital and not deal with that,\u201d he says. \u201cI was in Detroit for most of the shutdown and every other day there was a funeral procession going past my place. To be able to tell stories and honor the frontline workers \u2026 is a real honor for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
