Luckily for them, it\u2019s not a tool that\u2019s used by law enforcement, but one designed to highlight the dangers of such systems.<\/p>\n<p>The project is the brainchild of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fairtrials.org\/\">Fair Trials<\/a>, a criminal justice watchdog. The NGO is campaigning for a ban on predicting policing, which uses <span id=\"urn:enhancement-84f87d7e-85fe-4787-b978-a70565ccfee0\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.thenextweb.com\/tnw\/entity\/data-2\">data<\/span> analytics to forecast when and where crimes are likely to h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en \u2014 and who may commit them.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\">\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dont_miss_out_on_our_limited_2-for-1_offer_ending_soon\"><\/span>Don\u2019t miss out on our limited 2-for-1 offer ending soon!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The heart of tech is coming to the heart of the Mediterranean &#8211; March 30 &#8211; 31<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Proponents argue that the approach can be more accurate, objective, and effective than traditional policing. But critics warn that it hardwires historic biases, disproportionately targets marginalised groups, amplifies structural discrimination, and infringes on civil rights.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"m_-6781617985265978741normaltextrun\">\u201cIt might seem unbelievable that law enforcement and criminal justice authorities are making predictions about criminality based on people\u2019s backgrounds, class, ethnicity and associations, but that is the reality of what is happening in the EU,\u201d said Griff Ferris, Senior Legal and Policy Officer at Fair Trials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> is increasingly popular in Europe. In Italy, for instance, a tool known as Dalia has analysed\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fairtrials.org\/articles\/publications\/automating-injustice\/\">ethnicity data<\/a>\u00a0to profile and predict future criminality. In the Netherlands, meanwhile, the so-called Top 600 list has\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fairtrials.org\/articles\/publications\/automating-injustice\/\">been used to forecast<\/a>\u00a0which young people will commit high-impact crime.\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Yrycgb0m8PE\">One in three<\/a>\u00a0people on the list \u2013 many of whom have\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.parool.nl\/columns-opinie\/top-1000-zal-averechts-werken~b1b2874f\/\">reported<\/a>\u00a0being harassed by police \u2013\u00a0 were found to be of Moroccan descent.<\/p>\n<p>To illustrate the impacts, Fair Trials developed<span> a mock assessment of\u00a0future criminal behaviour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> <\/span>Unlike many of the real systems used by the police, the analysis has been made entirely transparent. The test uses a questionnaire to profile each user. The more \u201cYes\u201d answers they give, the higher their risk outcome. You can try it out for yourself\u00a0 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fairtrials.org\/predictive-policing\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span>Politicians from the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social<\/a>ists &amp; Democrats, Renew, Greens\/EFA, and the Left Group were invited to test the tool. In real-life, however, such systems could put them on police databases and subject them to close monitoring, random questioning, or stop and search. Their risk scores may also be shared with schools, employers, immigration agencies, and child protection services. Algorithms have even <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/artificial-intelligence-algorithm-technology-police-crime-7e3345485aa668c97606d4b54f9b6220\">led people to be jailed<\/a> with scant evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-6781617985265978741paragraph\"><span class=\"m_-6781617985265978741normaltextrun\">\u201cI grew up in a low-income neighbourhood, in a poor Eastern European country, and the algorithm profiled me as a potential criminal,\u201d Petar Vitanov, an MEP from the <span>Bulgarian Socialist Party<\/span>, said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-6781617985265978741paragraph\"><span class=\"m_-6781617985265978741normaltextrun\">\u201cThere should be no place in the EU for such systems \u2014 they are unreliable, biased, and unfair.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Fair Trials released the test results amid growing calls to outlaw predictive policing.<\/p>\n<p>The topic has proven divisive in proposals for the AI Act, which is set to become the first-ever legal framework on artificial intelligence.
