Sphere<\/em><\/strong>, Michael Crichton\u2019s sci-fi novel about an ancient alien spacecraft discovered on the ocean floor, is headed to HBO.\u00a0Westworld<\/em> producer\u00a0Denise Th\u00e9<\/strong>\u00a0is handling the series, serving as showrunner, writer, and executive producer of this new adaptation.\u00a0Sphere<\/em> is one of\u00a0Crichton\u2019s better books, and it was previously adapted into a kind-of-terrible movie in 1998 starring\u00a0Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, and Samuel L. Jackson. So here\u2019s hoping HBO gets it right.<\/p>\n

Variety says a\u00a0Sphere<\/em> TV series is in the works at HBO, with\u00a0Westworld<\/em>\u2018s\u00a0Denise Th\u00e9 leading the way. Published in 1987,\u00a0Sphere<\/em> was the brainchild of\u00a0Jurassic Park<\/em> author Michael Crichton, with the following synopsis:<\/p>\n

In the middle of the South Pacific, a thousand feet below the surface, a huge vessel is unearthed. Rushed to the scene is a team of American scientists who descend together into the depths to investigate the astonishing discovery. What they find defies their imaginations and mocks their attempts at logical explanation. It is a spaceship, but app<\/a>arently it is undamaged by its fall from the sky. And, most startling, it appears to be at least three hundred years old, containing a terrifying and destructive force that must be controlled at all costs.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

After\u00a0Jurassic Park<\/em>\u00a0became such a phenomenon, producers and studios were eager to adapt other Crichton novels. Sadly, this often resulted in lackluster films, and\u00a0Sphere<\/em> is no exception. Despite being directed by\u00a0Barry Levinson and starring\u00a0Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, and Samuel L. Jackson, the 1998\u00a0Sphere<\/em> movie is, to be blunt, terrible. It\u2019s bland and lifeless, which is a shame, because the book is pretty damn good.<\/p>\n

Back in the \u201990s, when\u00a0Jurassic Park<\/em> was all the rage, I got into a Crichton kick and read a bunch of his books. And of all the Crichton novels I read,\u00a0Sphere<\/em> always stood out to me as the most memorable. It has what would now be considered very familiar beats (movies like\u00a0Solaris<\/em>,\u00a0The Abyss<\/em>, and\u00a0Event Horizon<\/em> are all cut from the same cloth), but there\u2019s plenty of room for a solid adaptation.<\/p>\n

Whether or not it can all translate to a TV series is a different story, but I\u2019ll let the folks working on the show worry about that. The\u00a0Sphere<\/em> TV series is being produced by\u00a0Jonathan Nolan<\/strong> and Lisa Joy<\/strong>\u2018s Kilter Film and Robert Downey Jr.<\/strong> and Susan Downey<\/strong>\u2019s Team Downey, in association with Warner Bros. Television.<\/p>\n
