Bill and Ted Face the Music<\/em><\/strong>, the long-awaited third entry in the\u00a0Bill and Ted<\/em> series<\/a>, hits VOD and select theaters (mostly drive-ins) this week. Many of us thought a third film would never happ<\/a>en, so it\u2019s kind of a small miracle that Keanu Reeves<\/strong> and Alex Winter<\/strong> were able to reunite for more Wyld Stallyns action. Sadly, one original franchise player is no longer with us \u2013 George Carlin<\/strong>, who played the helpful Rufus in the first two films, and who died in 2008. And as it turns out,\u00a0Bill and Ted Face the Music<\/em> almost featured a Carlin cameo \u2013 in CGI form.<\/p>\n

Technology<\/a> has come a long way in the movies. We\u2019re at a point now where actors can be digitally de-aged, and, in some cases, even return from the dead. But one film that\u00a0won\u2019t<\/em> be bringing back the dearly departed is\u00a0Bill and Ted Face the Music<\/em>, though not from lack of trying. Speaking with Polygon,\u00a0Bill and Ted Face the Music<\/em> director Dean Parisot<\/strong> revealed that they were considering bringing the late, great George Carlin back in CGI form.<\/p>\n

The initial plan was to have the modern-day Bill and Ted interact with their younger selves, and Carlin\u2019s Rufus. The idea was to mix both unused footage from the original\u00a0Bill and Ted<\/em> as well as a CGI Carlin, but as\u00a0Parisot tells it, it just wasn\u2019t feasible on the\u00a0Face the Music<\/em> budget. \u201cWe probably could have afforded to build the Circle K set,\u201d said the director, \u201cbut we were using footage from the original\u00a0Bill & Ted<\/em>. We would have had to create a CG George Carlin, which is incredibly expensive, and very difficult to pull off in a convincing way. We didn\u2019t have the time or the money. But we had a great scene where they went back to talk to Carlin.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a recent \/Film interview,\u00a0Bill and Ted<\/em> writers\u00a0Ed Solomon<\/strong> and Chris Matheson<\/strong> talked about other deleted scenes from the film, specifically the way the script evolved over the years and certain ideas were jettisoned in the process. \u201cWe worked on it\u2026it was 10 years from the time that we started, and 11 years from the time we started our first meeting with Alex and Keanu, before the cameras rolled,\u201d Matheson said. \u201cSo in those 11 years, there\u2019s a lot of drafts. And there\u2019s actually a lot of really funny stuff in those drafts, that either conceptually didn\u2019t make sense as the piece evolved, or just financially it was not affordable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bill and Ted Face the Music<\/em> opens in select theaters and through\u00a0video on demand\u00a0in the United States on August 28, 2020<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
