\n Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton on Thursday said China is \u201crooting for Joe Biden\u201d because the Democratic presidential candidate is weak.<\/p>\n

\u201cJoe Biden would return us to a weak and dangerous past,\u201d the foreign policy hawk said in a speech at the Republican National Convention.<\/p>\n

\u201cBiden said the Chinese Communists aren\u2019t even our competitors, aren\u2019t \u2018bad folks\u2019 \u2014 just months before they unleashed this plague on the world. President Trump is clear-eyed about the Chinese threat, and he\u2019s making China pay,\u201d Cotton said, referring to the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut China\u2019s not giving up\u2014in fact, they\u2019re rooting for Joe Biden. America\u2019s other enemies won\u2019t give up either. But Joe Biden would be as wrong and weak over the next four years as he has been for the last 50.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cotton said that \u201cweakness is provocative\u201d and \u201cPresident Trump\u2019s strength has kept us out of war.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJoe Biden aided and abetted China\u2019s rise for fifty years with terrible trade deals that closed our factories and laid off our workers,\u201d Cotton said. \u201cJoe Biden allowed Chinese\u00a0fentanyl<\/span> to flood across our southern border. President Trump sanctioned Chinese drug dealers for poisoning our kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Trump administration\u2019s top counterintelligence official, National Counterintelligence and Security Center Director William Evanina, this month said that China app<\/a>ears to favor Biden, and that Russia seems to favor another Trump term.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe assess that China prefers that President Trump \u2013 whom Beijing sees as unpredictable \u2013 does not win reelection,\u201d Evanina said.<\/p>\n

\u201cChina has been expanding its influence efforts ahead of November 2020 to shape the policy environment in the United States, pressure political figures it views as opposed to China\u2019s interests, and deflect and counter criticism of China,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201c[China\u2019s] public rhetoric over the past few months has grown increasingly critical of the current Administration\u2019s COVID-19 response [and] closure of China\u2019s Houston Consulate.\u201d<\/p>\n

China \u201charshly criticized the Administration\u2019s statements and actions on Hong Kong, TikTok, the legal status of the South China Sea, and China\u2019s efforts to dominate the 5G market [and] recognizes that all of these efforts might affect the [election],\u201d Evanina said.<\/p>\n

Cotton, 43, is known as a foreign policy hawk on Mideast and China policy.<\/p>\n

He opposed former President Barack Obama\u2019s Iran nuclear deal. And Cotton was among the GOP senators sanctioned by China this month as relations nosedive between the countries, including over deception about COVID-19 before it became a global pandemic that killed 180,000 Americans and left millions unemployed.<\/p>\n

The Chinese foreign ministry said Cotton and other senators \u201cbehaved egregiously on Hong Kong-related issues\u201d after the Communist-run central government ended Hong Kong\u2019s political autonomy.<\/p>\n

On domestic policy, Cotton\u2019s priorities have clashed with Trump\u2019s own. For example, he unsuccessfully tried to rally Republican opposition to the Trump-supported First Step Act, which reformed prison and criminal sentencing policies. Trump signed the bill in 2018 and often boasts of doing so.<\/p>\n

A June op-ed in the New York Times written by Cotton urged Trump to \u201csupport local law enforcement with federal authority\u201d following nationwide riots in response to the Minnesota police killing of George Floyd.<\/p>\n

Cotton\u2019s opinion piece led to outrage among non-opinion section staff at the Times and the resignation of opinion editor James Bennet. Times publisher A. G. Sulzberger said there was \u201ca significant breakdown in our editing processes.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
