“#A talk with Mekhi Becton\u2019s best fan: His 13-year-old brother<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n He had planned on wearing No. 77, just like big brother does, but there will be no football season at John Rolfe Middle School in Richmond, Va., thanks to the pandemic.<\/p>\n

But at least Michael Becton will get the chance to witness the beginning of big brother Mekhi\u2019s NFL dream as blindside bodyguard for Sam Darnold, and road grader for Le\u2019Veon Bell and Frank Gore, as Michael lives out his own dream of one day growing up to play against big brother. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s always been dominant,\u201d Michael Becton said. \u201cI\u2019m pretty sure he\u2019ll be good in the NFL.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, I don\u2019t make a habit out of interviewing 13-year-olds, but because he and Mekhi are so close, I was interested as long, of course, as their mother, Semone, and father, Jerome, would consent to it.<\/p>\n

So I tell Michael Becton how Jets GM Joe Douglas made a promise before the NFL draft to Sam Darnold\u2019s parents that Mekhi would protect him, and the boy says: \u201cHe kept his promise.\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t ask, and I doubt Michael has been on the phone with Darnold, but Michael seems to have an idea about the quarterback\u2019s emotions now that he has a 6-foot-7, 370-pound wall in front of him.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s real excited now that he\u2019s got I think like the best rookie blocker in the NFL,\u201d Michael Becton says.<\/p>\n

Michael plays on both lines but is primarily a defensive tackle. I kiddingly ask him if he has tried a bull rush on big brother.<\/p>\n

\u201cNaaah, I don\u2019t want to try that,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

How tall are you?<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m 5-5, 5-6.\u201d<\/p>\n

What do you weigh?<\/p>\n

\u201c215.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mekhi was taller at the same stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d Michael says, \u201cI\u2019m kind of short.\u201d<\/p>\n

I assure him he will grow.<\/p>\n

\u201cI might not be able to get up there,\u201d Michael says, \u201cbut I want to be bigger and better.\u201d<\/p>\n

I tell him smaller and better would be good, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michael\u2019s big dream: Michael versus Mekhi.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat would be an absolute dream come true!\u201d Michael says. \u201cI admire, love and respect him so much. To have the opportunity to one day be able to play against him \u2026 man \u2026 now that would be wild!\u201d<\/p>\n

Michael has gotten pointers on his stance from Mekhi, but he prefers defense.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou get to hit people,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Mekhi has not cornered the family market on intimidation on the football field.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey always run away from me, or just kind of like, they look scared,\u201d Michael says.<\/p>\n

Michael watched Mekhi play at Highland Springs High School, and then get the NFL scouts drooling at Louisville.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was cool, it was fun, [to] see him dominate people,\u201d Michael says.<\/p>\n

Watching his big brother field that draft night call at home from the Jets was something else.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was shocking,\u201d Michael says.<\/p>\n

Until his phone just broke, Michael had been talking to Mekhi almost every day. Mekhi sounded happ<\/a>y to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe facility\u2019s nice, and he\u2019s at work a lot,\u201d Michael said. \u201cIt\u2019s fun working with vets and stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michael describes Mekhi this way: \u201cHumble, respectful, caring, loving.\u201d<\/p>\n

And also this way: \u201cHe\u2019s funny. \u2026 He\u2019ll tell funny jokes \u2026 just goofy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Goofy?<\/p>\n

\u201cHe acts silly and stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

He acts younger than he is, is that it?<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. He\u2019s just playful.\u201d<\/p>\n

They won\u2019t get to go to the arcade together for a while.<\/p>\n

\u201cI miss him a lot,\u201d Michael says.<\/p>\n

As Mekhi begins a new chapter in his life, Michael will be in the midst of nine weeks of online classes at school. The best advice Mekhi has given him?<\/p>\n

\u201c\u200a\u2018Do well at school,\u2019\u200a\u201d Michael says. \u201c\u200a\u2018Be a student first and an athlete second.\u2019\u200a\u201d<\/p>\n

Why is Mekhi an inspiration to him?<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause he was doing stuff right.\u201d<\/p>\n

As long as Mekhi can continue doing stuff right, Darnold will benefit.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a gunslinger,\u201d Michael says.<\/p>\n

And Bell will benefit.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a very talented running back,\u201d Michael says. \u201cHe\u2019s always been good. Played for the Steelers.\u201d<\/p>\n

What would Michael tell Jets fans about his big brother?<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he\u2019ll be the best. Make the Pro Bowl,\u201d Michael says.<\/p>\n

You must be proud of him. \u201cVery proud.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
