Kelli Newman, communications director at CPH, told ABC <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>. &#8220;Most cases that were hospitalized were due to dehydration, which is common in young children like that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">Measles is a very contagious disease with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention saying every individual infected by the virus <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"zZyg UbGl iFzk qdXb WCDh DbOX tqUt \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/about\/parents-top4.html#:~:text=Measles%20is%20very%20contagious.&amp;text=It%20is%20so%20contagious%20that,after%20that%20person%20has%20left.\">can spread it to up to 10 close contacts<\/a>, if they are unprotected including not wearing a mask or not being vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"zZyg UbGl iFzk qdXb WCDh DbOX tqUt \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/about\/parents-top4.html#:~:text=Measles%20is%20very%20contagious.&amp;text=It%20is%20so%20contagious%20that,after%20that%20person%20has%20left.\">Complications from measles<\/a> can be relatively benign, like rashes, or they can be much more severe, like viral sepsis, pneumonia or brain swelling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">The CDC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"zZyg UbGl iFzk qdXb WCDh DbOX tqUt \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/about\/faqs.html\">says<\/a> anybody who either had measles at some point in their life or who has received two doses of the MMR vaccine is protected against measles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">In the decade before the measles vaccine became available, an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"zZyg UbGl iFzk qdXb WCDh DbOX tqUt \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/about\/history.html\">estimated 3 to 4 million people were infected<\/a> every year, 48,000 were hospitalized and between 400 and 500 people died, according to the federal health agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">One dose of the measles vaccine is 93% effective at preventing infection if exposed to the virus. This included setting up special vaccine clinics and having pediatricians call parents whose children were behind the schedule to remind them to bring them in for their second shot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">In 2000, measles was declared eradicated from the U.S. thanks to the highly effective vaccination campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">However, last November, a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"zZyg UbGl iFzk qdXb WCDh DbOX tqUt \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/71\/wr\/mm7147a2.htm?s_cid=mm7147a2_w\">joint report from the CDC and the World Health Organization<\/a> declared measles to be an &#8220;imminent threat&#8221; around the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">The report found that in 2021, nearly 40 million children &#8212; a record-high &#8212; missed a dose of the measles vaccine. Specifically, 25 million missed their first dose and 14.7 million missed their second dose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">The authors stated much of the progress that was made in beating back the disease was lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">In the U.S., a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"zZyg UbGl iFzk qdXb WCDh DbOX tqUt \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8933962\/\">May 2022 study<\/a> found one-third of American parents reported a child with a missed vaccination due to barriers imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">Newman said that many parents of the unvaccinated children infected with measles had chosen not to have their kids receive the MMR shot due misconceptions that it causes autism, a theory that has been widely debunked across the scientific community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk eTIW sUzS\">&#8220;Many of these kids were vaccinated for everything, but MMR because there was a lingering misconception that it caused autism,&#8221; Newman said. &#8220;That&#8217;s what we heard in feedback when we worked with parents during the case investigation and so that was something we had to provide a lot of education and engagement around, and we&#8217;re continuing to do that.&#8221;<em>ABC News&#8217; Eli Cahan contributed to this report.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
