Sort of.<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-2'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-5\" href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/this-years-big-increase-in-social-security-benefits-is-falling-short-video\/#Tax_worries\" >Tax worries?<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-2'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-6\" href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/this-years-big-increase-in-social-security-benefits-is-falling-short-video\/#Its_not_all_bleak_news\" >It\u2019s not all bleak news<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<h1><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"This_years_big_increase_in_Social_Security_benefits_is_falling_short_Video\"><\/span>This year&#8217;s big increase in Social Security benefits is falling short [Video]<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div>For the past two months, the biggest increase in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social<\/a> Security benefits in four decades has been delivering much-needed breathing room for millions of Social Security recipients.<\/p>\n<p>Right?<\/p>\n<p>Many seniors disagree.<\/p>\n<p>According to a new <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/seniorsleague.org\/retirees-worried-their-cola-will-fall-short-this-year\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:survey;cpos:1;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">survey<\/a> by the Senior Citizens League, 54% of older Americans think the 8.7% increase in the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) this year won&#8217;t keep up with inflation.<\/p>\n<p>Worse yet, virtually all of the survey\u2019s respondents (96%) don\u2019t think this year\u2019s sizable bumpwill give them a chance to get their feet on the ground again and catch-up.<\/p>\n<p>And, furthermore, they worry that the increased income could result in bigger tax bills.This year\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/money.yahoo.com\/social-security-increase-drawbacks-182450907.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:souped-up COLA;cpos:2;pos:1;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp yahoo-link\">souped-up COLA<\/a> \u2014 which boosted the average retiree benefit by more than $140 per month starting in January \u2014 will push some retirees over income thresholds, which are not indexed for inflation. Thus, requiring them to pay income taxes on part of their Social Security benefit. (Many who have not paid tax on their benefits in the past.)<\/p>\n<p>More than half (51%) of the respondents worry they will pay more in 2022 taxes due to the 5.9% COLA increase they received last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven as inflation moderates, it will be extremely difficult for lower and modest income seniors, and those who have been retired the longest to \u2018dig out\u2019 from the shortfall between what Social Security beneficiaries received over the past two years, and the cumulative effect of actual inflation,\u201d Mary Johnson, a Social Security policy analyst for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/seniorsleague.org\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:The Senior Citizens League;cpos:3;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">The Senior Citizens League<\/a>, told Yahoo Finance.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Women_may_feel_more_stress\"><\/span><strong>Women may feel more stress <\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Nearly 9 out of 10 people aged 65 and older receive <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/news\/press\/factsheets\/basicfact-alt.pdf\" data-ylk=\"slk:a Social Security benefit;cpos:4;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">a Social Security benefit<\/a>, according to the Social Security Administration. Among elderly Social Security beneficiaries, 12% of men and 15% of women rely on Social Security for 90% or more of their income.<\/p>\n<p>For the typical retiree, it covers about half of their retirement income, according to Anqi Chen, a senior research economist and the assistant director of savings research at the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College.<\/p>\n<p>The anticipated Social Security inflation stress this year, however, likely will hit women retirees harder than their male counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen 65 and older typically have less retirement savings and smaller Social Security payments than men due to the earnings gap and time out of the workforce for caregiving and are more than twice as likely as men to be living in poverty,\u201d Cindy Hounsell, president of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/wiserwomen.org\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement,;cpos:5;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Women&#8217;s Institute for a Secure Retirement,<\/a> told Yahoo Finance.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cThe big COLA certainly helped them, but the costs of so many other items are so expensive that it may not be enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Standard_of_living_had_already_%E2%80%98worsened\"><\/span><strong>Standard of living had already \u2018worsened\u2019<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Seniors, overall, have been feeling the gap for months now. Last fall, nearly 2 in 5 of the 1,429 retirees The Senior Citizens League surveyed reported that their standard of living had worsened since March of 2020\u2014and they had depleted savings faster than planned. Roughly the same percentage said that they had no savings, had piled on debt, and had t<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed low income assistance programs.<\/p>\n<p>When the Social Security Administration, the federal government agency that oversees the benefits, announced the increase for this year, the largest since 1980, when the COLA was 11.2%, there was a resounding echo of applause. That\u2019s because it raised the average retiree benefit by more than $140 per month.<\/p>\n<p>The adjustment \u2014 coupled with a decrease in Medicare Part B premiums this year \u2014 was expected to make a significant difference in making ends meet for the more than 70 million retired senior citizens and disabled workers.<\/p>\n<p>While in January inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W)<strong>, <\/strong>the same index that\u2019s used to calculate the COLA, was 6.3%, down from 7.5% a year ago and the high of 9.1% in June of 2020, many prices from food to gasoline remain persistently high.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_COLA_helps_%E2%80%98tread_water_Sort_of\"><\/span><strong>The COLA helps \u2018tread\u2019 water. Sort of.<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The aim of the annual COLA is to allow beneficiaries to tread water in the face of rising prices and is calculated by averaging together the CPI-W consumer price index for the third quarter of the year \u2013 July, August, and September of 2022 \u2013 and then comparing that figure with the same data last year.<\/p>\n<p>The once a year inflation adjustment began in 1975, under a formula made into law by Congress, to help beneficiaries stay abreast of increasing day-to-day living costs. But there are concerns about how it\u2019s calculated.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caas-figure\">\n<div class=\"caas-figure-with-pb\" style=\"max-height: 828px\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"caas-img-container caas-img-loader\" style=\"padding-bottom:67%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"Senior woman comparing prices for meat selection.\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/Y_t.VXFGvmHegrcH7JsLTQ--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTEyNDI7aD04Mjg-\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/aol_yahoo_finance_433\/717655f5e986c881be79248cb2edb9ba\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Senior woman comparing prices for meat selection.\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/Y_t.VXFGvmHegrcH7JsLTQ--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTEyNDI7aD04Mjg-\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/aol_yahoo_finance_433\/717655f5e986c881be79248cb2edb9ba\" class=\"caas-img\"><\/noscript><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"caption-wrapper caption-aligned-with-image\"><figcaption class=\"caption-collapse\">After climbing over 10% last year, food prices are expected to rise nearly 8% this year, according to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/data-products\/food-price-outlook\/summary-findings\/#:~:text=In%202023%2C%20all%20food%20prices,of%204.5%20to%2011.7%20percent.\" data-ylk=\"slk:Department of Agriculture.;cpos:1;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Department of Agriculture.<\/a>(Getty Creative)<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cOn the question of whether or not the COLA is adequate, there are a couple things going on,\u201d Emerson Sprick, senior economic analyst at the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/bipartisanpolicy.org\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Bipartisan Policy Center,;cpos:6;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Bipartisan Policy Center,<\/a> told Yahoo Finance. \u201cOne is that CPI-W might not be an appropriate index for retirement benefits because retirees have different spending patterns than the rest of the population.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As important as Social Security\u2019s annual cost-of-living adjustments are, \u201cthey have not prevented those modest benefits from eroding for many decades,\u201d Nancy Altman, co-director of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/socialsecurityworks.org\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Social Security Works;cpos:7;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Social Security Works<\/a>, said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeniors and people with disabilities <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly spend disproportionately on health care and prescription drugs, whose costs generally are rising the fastest, and less on the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>, where prices are rising slower,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tax_worries\"><\/span><strong>Tax worries? <\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/irs-reminds-taxpayers-their-social-security-benefits-may-be-taxable\" data-ylk=\"slk:file a federal tax return;cpos:8;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\"> file a federal tax return <\/a>as an individual and your combined income \u2013 your adjusted gross income, plus nontaxable interest earned on investments, plus one-half of your Social Security benefits \u2013 is between $25,000 and $34,000, you may have to pay income tax on up to 50% of your benefits. If you earn more than $34,000, up to 85% of your benefits may be taxable.<\/p>\n<p>For those of you who file a joint return and have a combined income between $32,000 and $44,000, you may have to pay income tax on up to 50% of your benefits. If your joint income is more than $44,000, up to 85% of your benefits may be taxable.<\/p>\n<p>A rise in your income if you are a Medicare beneficiary \u2014 whether due to the COLA, earnings from employment, retirement savings, or pensions \u2014could also impact what you\u2019ll pay in Medicare premiums. If your<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/newsroom\/fact-sheets\/2023-medicare-parts-b-premiums-and-deductibles-2023-medicare-part-d-income-related-monthly\" data-ylk=\"slk:income;cpos:9;pos:1\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\"> income <\/a>is higher than $97,000 (individuals) or $194,000 (joint), you will see an increase in Part B and Part D premiums.<\/p>\n<p>Those who receive low-income assistance for healthcare costs could also see a reduced amount of assistance they receive through Medicare Savings programs or Medicare Extra Help, or Medicaid.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Its_not_all_bleak_news\"><\/span><strong>It\u2019s not all bleak news<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In a new Gallup poll out today, older Americans, more than half (63%) of adults 65 and older say they\u2019re satisfied with the Social Security and Medicare programs.
