Bernie Sanders\u2019s (I-Vt.) first presidential campaign. \u201cHis continued interest in public service laid the groundwork for modern day activists to take up causes from environmental justice to workers rights to universal health care.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Carter\u2019s reputation as a one-term president is marred by persistent domestic and international turbulence and what critics denounce as unsteady leadership, his community service is widely considered altruistic and urgent.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It has allowed for a quiet rebranding of the 39th president\u2019s legacy that is unique in American history.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Progressives feel a particular bond to his efforts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love the guy,\u201d said Cenk Uygur, host of the left-wing televised program \u201cThe Young Turks,\u201d who\u2019s had numerous conversations with Carter. \u201cI think he\u2019s the most misunderstood president.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Some of what liberal Democrats\u00a0regard as\u00a0Carter\u2019s more palatable priorities, especially putting climate justice and the risks of foreign fuel dependence on the nation\u2019s consciousness, align with much of what they\u2019re pushing for today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThough we don\u2019t agree with all of his policy positions, he was well ahead of his time on the now-urgent need to protect the environment and expand the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> safety net,\u201d said Maurice Mitchell, national director of the Working Families Party.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Carter\u2019s humble beginnings as an unpolished, unpretentious peanut farmer in Georgia make him an unlikely occupant of the nation\u2019s highest office and a sympathetic figure to the left.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Symbolically, parts of Carter\u2019s personal identity and unorthodox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach are mirrored by some of today\u2019s leading progressive figures. He\u2019s also set the groundwork for dozens of insurgent candidates from working-class roots to enter government.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Before then-Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) defeated the entire Democratic field in the Iowa caucuses, and before Sanders gave Hillary Clinton a real run for her money in the 2016 Democratic primary, Carter pulled off a better-than-expected placing in the same rural early nominating contest.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn his post-presidency, he pushed the establishment of the Democratic Party to think outside of the D.C. bubble,\u201d said Rahna Epting, executive director of MoveOn. \u201cHis legacy of progressive people-first policies is enduring.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>That reimagined model of campaigning and vision for what is possible, some argue, has fueled the aspirations of many under the modern progressive tent, where underrepresented candidates can ascend through unconventional means and test-run new ideas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Back when the country was still reeling from Watergate and the end of the Nixon era, Carter had an\u00a0alternative\u00a0approach to addressing the country\u2019s woes, including an affinity for southern-style retail politics. He convinced enough voters to give a relatively unknown governor a shot at the White House, and ultimately won the Democratic primary against the odds, fueled in part by the momentum of his local start.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJimmy Carter was really one of the first grassroots presidents,\u201d said Epting. \u201cHis election in 1976 was the end of top-down primaries. It was a watershed moment for elevating the people\u2019s voice.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Carter\u2019s ability to attract praise later in life from both liberals and moderates, including President Biden, after a shaky presidency makes him an anomaly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJimmy Carter\u2019s legacy is complex and doesn\u2019t fit neatly into contemporary ideological frames,\u201d said Mitchell. \u201cCarter led with his instincts regardless of the political consequences.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Carter is a progressive from a different era and time, and his policies when he served in the White House don\u2019t all pass liberal muster in\u00a0today\u2019s climate\u00a0\u2014 at least for some.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cAfter leaving office, he was wonderfully progressive, but while in office he was too economically conservative,\u201d Uygur said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His presidency was dogged by inflation and many\u00a0criticized his\u00a0approach to the economy and unemployment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His tenure was notably marked by the Iran hostage crisis, a traumatic event for Americans living through that era.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But\u00a0he also had major foreign policy successes, including with the Camp David peace accords with Egypt and Israel.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was terrific in foreign policy in an underrated way,\u201d Uygur argued. \u201cHe literally did peace in the Middle East and got Israel and Egypt a peace deal that has lasted decades.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The former president and Nobel Peace Prize awardee has in later years coalesced global support around democracy reforms through the Carter Center and significant contributions to the house building movement through Habitat for Humanity. Progressives say he has also made a lasting impact on public health.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis post-presidency life was an exercise in service and selflessness. He was outspoken on injustice in the U.S. and abroad and was among a small group of public officials that were willing to be on the record when naming those injustices were inconvenient,\u201d Mitchell said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll lives and presidencies are complex and Carter\u2019s was no different.
